New Tires

Just had a blow out on I 275 in Fl.( that was dangerous). My five year old properly inflated Michelin tire disintegrated (coachnet to the rescue). Since my expensive Michelin tire only lasted five years I was thinking of getting a less expensive tire and changing more often. I will also replace the other three. The tires are 215/75 r 17.5 H or J rated. Please recommend a brand for me?

If they look good I would give then 1-2 more years then keep the one you just bought for a spare.

I plan on running my GY "H" tires for 8 years along as they look good.

" Good Year BFG, 16 ply tires"

What is this tire you are referring to? is it a GoodYear or BF Goodrich "BFG" ? 16 ply is that a "G" or "H" rated tire?

Elwood, I feel your pain, I had one of my OEM ,(Chinese), blow out coming down I-75. I replaced the one year old tires with Good Year BFG, 16 ply tires. In addition to the one that blew, two others had bubbles so I changed all four at the same time! I hope these last little longer! In your post you state the tires were five years old, did you check the date stamp on the tire? They could be closer to 6 years old from date of manufacture! Anything over five, in my opinion, should be checked for cracking and dry rot at least annually. Both from personal knowledge and in reading the posts here, I have seen tires with perfectly good tread blow out from dry rot or some other issue! I would spend the $$ on "good" tires. I just got the repair estimate from my insurance company, $3k in damage caused by a tire failure!

GoodYear and BFG are two different companies? 16 ply tires?

Did you install Goodyear G614 LRG 14 ply tires or G114 LRH 16 ply tires?

What's you mileage like traveling 75 with the monster behind you??

Chris

Have not towed this one at 75 but I did quite a bit when traveling AZ and a few other states with the 2011 Dually at 28-29K combined weight. This pic was with 40mph head winds east on 40 leaving Oklahoma.

I would guess it would be 8 with no head wings.

at the same time you invest in new tires, invest in a tire pressure moniter system. you don't say what "blew" the tire, but a pot hole or piece of road junk may have been to blame and you did not notice it. After all, you started the day with properly inflated tire and nothing could possibly go wrong, RIGHT?

Hercules tires? Anyone here try e'm. I've heard some good things. However I always have bought Michelins, except this go around I bought BF Goodrich (owned by Michelin)

NO way would I go with a cheaper brand. The 17.5 cost less than the Goodyear G614. Plus, there are 17.5 tires from a number of quality manufacturers like Hankook, Continental, Toyo, and Bridgestone.
One thing about the Goodyear is they always seem to stand behind their trailer tires and pay for any damage incurred within the first 5 years due to tire failure.
The Michelin tire info says it is rated at 62mph while most the other brands in this size tire are rated at 75 mph. That alone is one reason to go with another brand over Michelin.

The 62 MPH is a hold over from 100 KM. Michelin reps have stated that the XTA at lighter loads can be used at high speeds.

Tire ratings are a relationship of speed, inflation and weight carried. Even with 8K axles each tire has 805 pounds of excess capacity. So Michelin states that because the tire is never fully loaded it can exceed the 62 MPH rating. Given the weight of trailers that use such tires, unless one is using a class 7 or 8 truck as a tow vehicle, they should consider around 65 as a max tow speed anyway. Chris

The OP is looking for 17.5" tires so a Maxxis ST8008 or the G614 RST both being a 16" tire won't work.

I frequent more haulers forums than RV forums and I see the Sailun S637 in a 215/75r-17.5" 30.6" dia 16 ply rating @ 4805 lb capacity 125 psi is a very popular tire for those folks that are on the road 24/7 pulling heavy GN trailers.

nuwaowners.org has a very good tire forum for members HH II heavy trailers.

Go with GY "H" tries the only failure I have heard of with a GY "H" is the one Rusty just mentioned. Rusty can confirm or deny but I believe GY paid for a new tire and the damages. I only buy Michelins for my TV's and had excellent performance but for the RV it's GY since they will pay when not a road hazard. I for sure use the 75MPH rating of the GY tires when traveling in the 75mph speed limit states.

Op I would bet your Michelin tire was a recipient of something that punctured the tire.
