I agree with all that except the Mobil1.
But I retired from Shell. LOL

10-30 may be approved, but my 2014 F350 diesel owners manual said to use 5w-40 for severe duty, which was defined as towing.

Motorcraft SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil

You are NOT going to find this at your local Walmart !

According to Shell this does not meet the Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 specification.

I don't know where you would buy 5w-40 Motorcraft. My dealer didn't have any. I got the deer in the headlights look when I told them they might should read a Ford manual.
No worries now though, I progressed to a Cummins.

Back to the tow itself, what gear and rpm were you running? Roughly what speed?

Look at the link Travlingman posted for Ford approved oils to use. Shell Rotella T6 is now approved and I suspect Shell hasn't updated their website yet.

So yes you can go to Wal Mart and buy a Motorcraft filter and Shell T6 and have a very enjoyable oil change experience.

BTW... The only big oil company Ford hasn't approved is Delo since they choose to make their oil gas and diesel compatible by keeping zinc and phos. levels low. A big mistake IMO.

Motorcraft Super Duty 10W-30 Diesel Engine Oil is sold at Walmart for under $20. It is API certified CK-4.

Even the old non-synthetic transmission fluid was good for over 250F.

Did you mean CJ4 ?

Nope. CK-4 is the "top of the heap" for diesel oil at the moment.

API Service Category CK-4 describes oils for use in high-speed four-stroke cycle diesel engines designed to meet 2017 model year on-highway and Tier 4 non-road exhaust emission standards as well as for previous model year diesel engines.
.
.
.
API CK-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CJ-4, CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, and CH-4 and can effectively lubricate engines calling for those API Service Categories.

Thank you for the update... think I'll stick to API service category that the instruction manual states should be used in my diesel motor..

Half correct, half incorrect.

The current Motorcraft diesel oils meet and EXCEED API CK-4 specifications so they can be used in other non-Ford engines that spec CK-4. Of course, they meet the Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 specification.

I used Rotella T5 15W-40 synthetic blend in my 2016 Ram. Might go to T6 5w-40 in the 2018.
