SRW vs DRW

Is there a general rule regarding how much weight is okay for SRW and how much is too much? We are thinking of a larger 5er and not sure how much larger will require a new truck too.

Well with a normal pin of 20% to 25% you will likely over your rear axle and possibly tire ratings.
This is one of the most misleading numbers truck manufactures publish. You can't carry as much as you can pull. Even with only 2,000# of stuff in the 5er, weight goes to 16,190# and at the 22% pin weight percentage 3,562#. Which is more than your total payload, and will likely overload your rear axle. Worst of all you could exceed your TIRE ratings.

Just have to ask, how does that 5er tow/ride with less than 15% pin weight?? I would think it would be a bit of a bucking bronco.

Hi, brand new member looking for confirmation from the experts (lotโ€™s of good discussion in this topic) and I donโ€™t want to trust the salesman. Iโ€™ve poured through the owners manuals and towing guides and have calculated a trailer GVWR of 18,454 based on my TV (I know I need to actually weigh my TV, but letโ€™s assume my base numbers are correct).

First question - does this TT GVWR sound right?
Second question - Would a 5th wheel with a UVW of 14,190, carrying capacity of 3,810 and pin weight of 3,176 be too much for this TV?

Cummins had me figured but those weights do include 400 lbs of ballast in the front closet to offset some of the bike's weight:

You must have a helium balloon in your front bedroom or something. My trailer weighs in the 9k lb range and has 2300 pounds of pin weight!

Good for you for not being overloaded and actually checking, though. The newer SRWs definitely have the advantage with the stronger tires and higher GVWR. Mine is maxed out at 9900.

It looks like he's towing 17,000 lbs. with a SRW truck, of course he's going to be WAY overloaded.


I'm not overloaded with 16900 lbs hooked to my SRW.


Front truck axle 4980 lbs ..... empty weight is 4860

This is incorrect in BC; DOT conduct random roadside checks with portable scales. I happen to know 2 people who have been stopped and weighed; they were both within their vehicle's GVWR and were allowed to proceed.

This is one of the reasons we have had a DRW truck since 2006; to be well within the GVWR of the truck.

OK add RAWR.

My truck I would NOT hesitate to go over 9,750# RAWR since my tires are rated to well over 11k.

How would they handle my truck loaded to it's RAWR and ZERO weight added to my front axle causing me to weigh 15k when my GVWR is 14k?

"**The gross weight of any vehicle or combination of vehicles shall be the sum of the individual gross axle weights of all the axles of the vehicle or combination of vehicles.**"

I would assume they would do as mentioned above and what "I" DO as in carry proper tonnage. My RAWR 9,750# FAWR 6,000# = 15,750# my scale weight loaded is around 15,400#. I am under my GCVWR.
