Good Day Folks,
Looking at a Thor Outlaw 35SG on a Ford 550 chassis with 6.7L diesel.
Anyone have any experience with this unit, good & bad.
Also if anyone can advise what kind of mileage, (l/100km or MPG) it would be greatly appreciated.
It's for 2 ppl & 2 dogs, carrying a 14 HD CVO Ltd about a 1000 lbs

Thanx in advance.

I spoke to a Ford truck specialist at a local dealership, who said the gears could be changed up to 3.55 (for $1000.00 Cdn + reprogramming costs) with no loss in capability & improve the mileage to 20 some MPG.

Yes he was BSing you. You are not going to get 20MPG with your setup.

If the manufacturer could get 20MPG in those rigs with a lower gear ratio and still be able to haul everything don't you think they would do it? Of course they would, they would have done it years ago.

Bottom line your rig is heavy and it's designed to haul even more weight. That gear ratio is part of what makes up your weight rating and hauling capacity. Reduce it and you're reducing those numbers too. There is no magic way to increase your MPG. Welcome to owning an RV, you've got to pay to play.

As to your comment about the number of posts. The challenge is your RV like, Class A Toy Haulers, fits in various categories. Most Toy Haulers are trailers. These are not hugely popular units so it can be tough to fine people with your rig that can reply to you. You're welcome to post here or in the Class B forum, which ever you think you'll get the most help from. Being that you have a motorized rig you might get more replies in the Class B group, assuming that front end unit is being used with other Class B RVs too.

A gear change will not give you a 66% increase in economy.

That's a lot of air to move, and 12 is pretty good.

Compare the frontal area to a F-250 without a trailer, you won't get the mileage they do.

I know it's been only 2 days but I was hoping for a few more replies.
Going to throw a variable in for discussion.
According to Ford 2012 specs, (From Thor) the 35SG comes with a 4.88 rear axle ratio & should, according to Thor make 12 MPG (19.6 L / 100 km).
I spoke to a Ford truck specialist at a local dealership, who said the gears could be changed up to 3.55 (for $1000.00 Cdn + reprogramming costs) with no loss in capability & improve the mileage to 20 some MPG.
Any mechanically inclined to help out here. Is he bsing me & if this is true why do the manufactures not put higher gear ratios in.
Confused.

Thanx in advance

I'm interested in the replies too. For me it will also be for 2 people, 2 dogs, and the same 2014 Harley CVO Limited. 🙂 I don't want to spend as much as the 35 costs, so I'll probably opt the 29 on the E450 chassis, but I'm still interested.

Hello Wolfwise and welcome to the forum. I don't know about the Outlaw itself but I do have the F-550 Super C and the 6.7 PS. See my signature for more info. I love everything about the F-550. Comfort, ride, power, and mileage. With all the different driving conditions, sometime with/without toad, I've gotten 10.2 to 11.0 MPG and it's not broken in yet. I don't remember if it's in this forum or not but there is someone who recently got the Outlaw and left some feed back. If it's on this forum, you'll hear from him soon I'm sure. Might have been a class A though. Good luck
