Using the "Quote" feature

Folks,
I spend quite a bit of my valuable moderating time editing posts to remove unnecessary quotes. I do this to keep both myself and you from seeing the same posts over and over again when two members are discussing back and forth.

Quick question for those of you who just hit the "quote" button every time you answer a another member. Would you repeat, word for word, everything someone said to you as you talk with them in person? Of course you wouldn't and the same thing applies here. There is no reason at all to quote someone who posts immediately above you in the thread.
Naturally, if you are replying to someone who posted earlier in the thread, with several other replies in between or is on a different page, then the use of the quote is perfectly applied.

I would hope that those of you who do just hit the quote button when replying to a member post would take notice of my words above, and if you don't, be advised that your posts may disappear into never never land instead of being edited to fix the improper use of the quote feature.
Thank you.:)

Can't remember ever quoting something someone says while I'm talking to them....of course, I also don't use a keyboard while talking to them either.

But if we're going to be this nit-picky on posting etiquette, especially on a forum that I suspect heavily leans towards a demographic with less than stellar tech familiarity, under threat of post deletion without notice...then I suppose it may be time to find another forum to waste my time on.

I do appreciate the heads up though.

Steve,
Snip..."maybe if people who don't use quotes could type the name of the person they are answering that would clear up that issue and maybe it would catch on."

Good idea but don't hold your breath for this to happen. It is much easier to just hit the "quote" button.:R

BarneyS, ya by typing my name it helps a lot also, the problem we find isn't really going to happen in a thread like this where the activity is fairly low. but some of the ones in the tech that take on a life of their own and you can have 30 or more posts in a day it can be very confusing especially of the comment could fit to a number of different posts, but as you have said constant scrolling through full quotes with pictures and such can become cumbersome, so maybe if people who don't use quotes could type the name of the person they are answering that would clear up that issue and maybe it would catch on.

Steve, you are correct, I was replying to your comment just as I am doing this one. You should be aware that if It is a deleted comment that you replied to before deletion (don't think you can see or reply to a comment that has already been deleted) then most mods will also delete any other posts that quote it or mention it.

There should be no confusion at all when replying to a person immediately above you in a thread. As has already happened earlier, if another post or two come in between, most members can make the proper connection and do not get confused.

This just shows my point more clearly. Who are you replying to? I am assuming it is me, but it could have been a deleted comment and the more the conversation goes on the more confusing it gets. but ya when some one posts 3 pictures, and it is quoted with the pictures 23 times it gets a bit much 😉 usually I use quotes to address a specific part of the quote, so all the unimportant stuff is taken away, but like you said that doesn't always happen

Good advice and I limit quotes but unfortunately I have no way of knowing my reply will be next in line or numerous other posts in between. Think of it as a multiiple person phone call and I respond to a comment 15 minutes earlier and hence not context. But I can and do make a educated assumption. :B

Actually, that may be quite rare. I have been posting on RV.net for 23 years and moderating for 22 and have run across that situation only now and then. It did not pose a problem for me to keep things in order and understand the post.

If you are reading a post and then reply to it, your reply should follow immediately after it. Even if there are several posts in between it is very easy to follow the discussion from my experience.
Barney

edit: HA - looks like it just happened to me. BobsYourUncle got in there before my post to you which included the quote. No problem..Easy to follow.:)
He has some good advice concerning this. Use of the Snip can really help with understanding a long conversation. Good example also by including his quote of my opening post and using the snip tool to shorten it up.

Agreed Barney, the posts get long and hard to follow. Thanks for this.

This is what I do to avoid all the repeat info, and to make it known what post I am referring / replying to.

On the opposite side of this is the people who don't use the quote system and you have no idea who they are replying to. you can also edit out the parts of the quoted text you are not replying to specifically and pictures to reduce the amount of stuff you have to filter through.
