Any suggestions should I get a pre purchase inspection or call a Cummins, any suggestion

Thanks Doug - 100 percent, Iโ€™m happy taking the unit AS IS due to age and went back to a national dealer I purchased before and the experience was great , this time around slow and steady as I really donโ€™t want a repeat you can see in my other posts, thanks again for all the input

People are confusing what AS-IS IS. There is a difference between selling AS-IS with no failure check lights and selling with a KNOWN check light. AS-IS means no warranty. BUT, selling with a system failure light ON means the buyer is NOT using their head, to trust the dealer. The Motorhome, THAT OLD, is telling you it aches and has a problem. GET THE PROBLEM RESOLVED BEFORE YOU PURCHASE. Doug

Thanks Bruce
Agree with all your comments, including the as is on.
Hope to get more info in writing off the service manager, the vague from the internet sales was making it difficult to get a full picture of the overall condition, even after they confirm the check engine light issue is revolved Iโ€™m going to get a lemonsquad pre-purchase as the reviews for this dealer are not the best.

Thanks again all, I always get great advise

A light being on isn't the end of the world, and a dealer not having a diesel mechanic on retainer isn't the end of the world either. Not every dealer is a big dealer and not every dealer has someone as knowledgeable as Doug in their service department.

It sounds like you're moving forward and doing your due diligence as needed.

If everything else was OK I certainly wouldn't let a light on stop me from looking. It would stop me from purchasing until I knew what the cause was.

As for the AS-IS part, I have to agree with Rick on this one. I can't think too many dealers would be interested in offering any kind of a warranty on a 17 year old unit.
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

When I allowed the chassis battery to go completed dead in my Cummins 8.3 CAPS system the engine on board computer gave a light. I had to get a Cummins computer to reset the engine computer..

Quick update- I had a call and walk around with the sales department and they were open in the issues with the coach and when I pressed them twice during the call if the check engine light would be resolved they said YES, now the, saying yes and them being a main main dealer which Iโ€™ve purchased from at a different location. Furthermore Iโ€™ve resorted to email with the dealer and they have said they will provide a list from there service department of all the work to be completed on the rig. I have read scares ecm issues etc which are expected via Craigslist but from. A main dealer my expectations are higher even if itโ€™s an older rig. The funny thing which gave me the red flags was when dealing with the internet sales via email they said they wouldnโ€™t be fixing this now the sales department are saying they will fix anything which is a safety issue, ie tires older than 7 years old, slide out not working and inoperable electric step.

Hi pbutler, would a Cummins mechanic go to an Rv dealer to read the code and quote or a pre purchase inspection ?

Yes they will. I had this done when I purchased a RV some Yrs ago. The RV had very low miles for its age so I requested that the engine be checked/diagnosed by a Cummins computer. He was able to tell us the engine was like new and had no issues. The dealer paid for it.

There are 3 Cummins service locations within a 45 minute drive. Berkeley is 30 miles from Boston for Pete's sake lol. The Dealer is blowing smoke up your butt.

So, the dealer said they donโ€™t have a service engineer for diesels in Berkeley MA. If this is true, no smoke is involved, right? If there are 3 Cummins service locations within a 45-minute drive, I see the dealer as being correct in their statement. Where's all this smoke you see?? :h

You are correct, that's not unlike Realtors saying "upgraded electric" on a listing in 2022 when the upgrade was done in 1970 from knob and tube to Aluminum wiring lol.

Doesn't matter anyway as as the OP now stated it's sold "as-is" which he originally did not say, which means exactly that.

Bingo. The dealer got taken on trade and he knows what is wrong and the cost to repair. So, he states AS-IS, which may or may not be legal depending on his state laws. There are more regulations on licensed Dealers than on private parties when it comes to AS-IS. For instance, private or dealer in California, IF the vehicle does NOT pass California Smog inspection, the AS-IS is voided and the seller has to refund the money and take the vehicle back. It is up to seller to have a current smog inspection done. Doug

PS, AS I stated before, it would be foolish to buy out of state with a known engine problem.

Well, it hasn't been determined that there's a known engine problem, AND I would be surprised to see any dealer sell anything that's almost 17 YEARS OLD with other than an As-Is stipulation. Nobody is going to warrant something that old. Simply do your due diligence, or find another coach.

ANY Dealer that has a vehicle on his lot with a Check engine problem, has the obligation to take it to the closest Chassis repair facility and GET IT FIXED, WITH A REPAIR ORDER you CAN LOOK AT TO VERIFY THEY DID A REPAIR. Motorhomes and Auto's are no different when a DEALER is selling it. Check engine light? Would you buy a Car from a DEALER with the check engine light on? Is this from a Camping World Dealer? RV dealers usually do not have a chassis service dept. Nothing wrong with that. But, they do have an obligation to get a chassis malfunction fixed before they sell it. Doug

Just to recap, this class a is in a Rv dealer in Berkeley they did the walk around and all looks good with condition etc except they stated โ€œsold as is โ€œ and there is a check engine light. I asked if they could read the error and let me know . They informed me they donโ€™t have a diesel guy at the Rv center.

If you were purchasing what would you do next Iโ€™m down in Florida, may be nothing have a call with the sales person today to do a walkthrough and discuss ?

What I would do is NOT buy this coach! You could be looking at a complete engine rebuild or replacement. With the check engine light on it could be anything drive train related. Don't fall in love with a hunk of plastic when there are so many good choices out there.
A mechanic reading the error code will be able to give the mechanic a good place to start, he can't be sure that fixing that one problem is the only problem that exists. You are threading on some scary water there.

How about checking with a truck repair road service to read the code?
Personally, if you can't get the code read, I wouldn't buy it. Might be a simple fix,but what if it's not?
