2006 Tiffin slide gears keep shearing

I have a 2006 Tiffin with electric slides that the bedroom slide had the gear shear some of the teeth off. have had it replaced. After two to three times ( during testing ) bring it in it happened again. Person that replaced it said someone held the button in to long which caused it to. The manual says once it gets in should hold button for another 5 to 8 seconds. Which at the most was done. Question is isn't there a stop or breaker that when enough pressure it shuts off. My other slide has no problems.

For future reference, not all rack and pinion slide systems have a clutch as DR describes. It seems manufacturers have found another way to save a $1 on don't use them. So the motor just stalls and a lot of force is put on those gears.

Unless you have a Schwintek Slide system, you absolutely DO NOT want to hold the slide switch once it has stalled.

I was NOT talking about ALL systems, but the OP's specific system which I have first hand knowledge. Doug

from a power gear manual

YOUR SLIDE-OUT CONTROLLER
The slide-out control unit for your slide-out system is located near the motor assembly.
This unit is controlled by the switch panel located in the main living area. It activates
both the motor and the slide-out alarm when the switch panel is operated. It also limits
the amount of power the drive motor can draw, shutting off the system when the motor
load exceeds the control’s setting.
CAUTION:
This control has an adjustment that allows for a wide range of power
settings. If this adjustment is set too high, damage to the room seal flanges can result.
Please note the adjusting screw’s normal setting, and do not exceed the maximum setting

Sorry got back to everyone so long. Had a lot going on. I want to thank everyone for there input and help. It is a power gear set up. You can still get gears for these you just have to look around. I called Red Bay ( thanks mikestock ) they really didn't know but said they have replaced new gears with in a month and blamed them on material that they make them now days. But they sent me on the right direction. It turns out someone changed the motor out with a high tork that would be used in a Large slide ( looks the same ). To much pressure. Soooo be careful in or out Don't hold it on once in or out. Have two more spare gears till I will drop a dime on a new motor. Thanks again for everyone's help.

256-356-8661. Ask for Brent Bullard (I think, ext. 38. Not sure). He can answer or refer you to the right person.

wonder if someone has replaced the shear pins with harder pins, it seems like the shear pins should shear before a gear breaks (mine has broken both shear pins which I replaced myself)

If it had the clutch system, you would hear several rather loud bangs as it stops.
Bedroom slide may or may not be the same. If you see an aluminum track(s) on the exterior sides of the slide then it's the Schwintek system.
No such tracks and it will most likely be the same kind of R&P type.

Schintek = hold down switch 3~5 seconds after it stops.
All other types = release switch as soon the slide stops.

Schwintek systems were not available 10 years ago. When they became available(2010 or so), only CHEAP Inexpensive Trailers used them at first, until LCI could get a foothold in the RV industry for the Schwintek system. The OEM's wanted to see what the track record would be for that system. The original Schwintek had numerous faults and problems and LCI went thru about 2 updates to the design(build) and wiring before OEM's started using it in large quantities. Doug

It doesn't really stall it just sounds like two seals coming together or tight

Thank you Tiffin did ship a gear that they said would fit but was the wrong one.
this wasn't easy but We did after much resource find the right gear ( perfect match teeth, size, thickness was a replacement for unit )that was on hand. The large slide does stop and does not rachet. it is the same a the bedroom ? If this is the case with the side as soon as you hear it tighten up let off switch ? If that's the case this is Very temper mental. OR does the transmission clutch take up the slack so the teeth don't shear as easy ?

The Motor/Transmission has a built in clutch. When you extend or retract fully, you will hear it rachet. You STOP when you jear the first rachet. Your manual is WRONG. There are some slides you can hold for 5 to 10 seconds. YOUR specific Slide you do NOT. And yes, it could cause the gears to shear. MY question is, Did he replace JUST the defective gear? Because, the individual parts of that Powergear/LCI gear assbly are no longer available, you MUST replace the complete motor/transmission and the BAD gear as a unit. That is how Tiffin sells the replacement part. This is just part of what your system looks like. Doug
