Towed a 5700 lb Tahoe LTZ behind ours with no problems.

The 8.1 has a better towing capacity with the 19,500 GVWR chassis and GCWR of 26,000 lbs than the diesel on the 22,000 GVWR chassis with 26,000 lb GCWR. That is why we selected the gasser even though I really would have preferred the torque of the diesel and the exhaust brake.

Late in the game, just before the Kodiak was discontinued, Thor built a few with the 30,000 lb GCWR. As I recall, the primary change was upgrading the transmission from the 6 speed Allison 1000 to the Allison 2500.

We tow our raceboat with our 2006 Gulfstream Ultra with no problems. Weights around 5000lbs. You definitely want equalizer hitch with a race trailer.

8.1 in an 32 ft Jayco grey hawk 32ss, in a Kodak 5500 chassis not towing that much weight, however very happy with the engine, seems to have enough power towing my pickup, 48,000 miles and does not burn any oil between changes, ( about 6000 miles between )avg about 6.5 mpg at 63mph...........

I tow my 24' enclosed with my 8.1 Kodiak. Trailer with racecar and stuff is 7500 lbs. that was mostly on the front range in Colorado. My house was at 6500'. It will do it. Weighed it once at a CAT scale with a full tank of water ( near 100 gal.) it came in over 28k.

We been fulltime traveling in it the last 2 years.

I have had the 8.1 and Dmax. The 8.1 will tow fine but the milage is terrible and they have a history of burning oil. Mine went through a quart every 1000 miles.

I have a friend that has the 8.1 pulling a similar weight race trailer. He really has no complaints. Not the power of the Duramax but he always gets there.

I do not have a 8.1. But many Super C's have the 8.1. While they do not get mpg that the Duramax does. They do well with trailers up to 7,000 lbs. Depending on which model Super C you are looking at.

I have no experience with a Kodiak, but in one quick search came across this
Kodiak with 8.1

Not very highly regarded there.
