any mice during storage?

We currently have a Winnebago Class A. We farm for a living and store the RV on farm. We have not had mice in our class A for any of the 3 years we've owned it. Now either the Class A is sealed up great or its the electronic mouse repellent plugged into the 110 outlet. That's a toss up, only used the repellent this last year.

We are thinking of going to a class C. From your experience do any of you have mouse problems during storage?

If you do have mouse problems, do your grey, and black tanks have a basement, or are they open right to the ground. I'm thinking if they have a basement they would be sealed up better.

Any experience with basement or non basement and mouse problems?

I don't want to know how to control mice. I want to know if any of you notice if a basement in you class c keeps out the mice better.

would appreciate your experience.

I have found that the "JAWZ" traps with the wide trigger work quite well, when placed along corridors that mice run down. No bait needed.

Another trick is a large, wide bowl. Fill the center with vegetable oil, add a few sunflower seeds. Mice hop in, get oil coated, can't get out. However, if a rat gets in, they can overturn the bowl, making a mess.

Cats=no mice
I also use the flip type traps. I get one or two a year that way.

Squirrels are close cousins to rats......and exhibit similar behaviors.

I think you may have squirrels.

I assumed rats because I'd never seen a squirrel around my house (plenty of then down near the river where I work), but last night I saw a squirrel in the yard. So I think you are right.

We have used Irish Spring Soap bars, quartered and placed them in various places in storage, sink cabinets and other places which we read about on here. No mice other than the first one or two when we camped in the mountains before using the soap. But you all provided some great ideas!

These work well in the house.

Has anyone used in their RV for storage? I probably will.

Also, I know the packaged product will not say but is this also a bird deterant? Thinking about placing in the RV carport.

Edit: Just saw where you live and there are several rodent species out there. Packrats come to mind.

This year we had a problem with one or more rats (not mice, the poops were too big for mice) living under the hood of the Jamboree. After the vehicle sat for many months I finally opened the hood and found the engine compartment stuffed with leaves nibbled off a nearby hedge. The leaves were fresh, so the rat had been working not long before I discovered him. The entire air intake was stuffed with leaves, I had to dismantle it to clean it out.

After cleaning up as best I could (the steel crossmember in the foreground of the pic is still stuffed with leaves, I can't figure out how to get them out), I came back the next day and the intake was once again stuffed with leaves. The rat must have worked all night (I assume a single rat because I have never ever seen rats cooperate).

I cleaned it up again and moved the vehicle away from the hedge, and that brought me some peace for a while.

So this weekend I opened the hood and found this: the intake was once again stuffed with leaves, but the rat had also collected gravel and stuffed the last couple inches of the intake with rocks, and also left some rocks elsewhere under the hood. Boy, that must have been hard work, carrying each rock in his teeth while climbing up into the engine.

I simply can't imagine why he did it.

Best mouse trap I've used in an RV? The toilet!

Fill the bowl half full and leave the lid up.

They smell the water, go for a drink and can't get out so they drown.
It works better than anything else I've tried.

btw- I won't use poison.
While you may be able to keep other animals from the poison you can't keep the poisoned mice from other animals.

Great idea!! Flush and they're gone!

I don't like poison either. Mainly because they will then hide out somewhere to die where they are hard to find.

I opened the battery box to my stored Yamaha Rhino the other day to find a mouse house. After vacuuming all of it out I found a small broken ground wire and pulled on it so see if it moved etc. Well.....it was a Mouse Mama's TAIL!! She nosed her way down into a small crevice. Found baby's skeleton nearby. Good grief.

You can spray the bowl with silicone if you want but it's not necessary.

My class C is ancient and has no basement - just open tanks and plumbing under the rear of the RV.

I don't think a basement matters. What matters are holes to get inside the RV, and there are probably plenty.

We have never had a mouse problem. Well, I say that. One time, working under the bench seat of the kitchen table, I found an ancient mouse nest with a dead mouse in it, clearly it had been there a loooong time (RV is 28 years old - we have had it 10).

But never any damage or any other evidence.

1. First thing to do is go out and 'night'. Turn on all the lights in the RV and then crawl underneath your MH. Even on a brand spanking new coach you will find numerous points of light coming from the floor, etc, from all the over sized holes the manuf drills for wiring, plumbing etc. And they do NOT fill them in.

Fill all those holes with the 'new' Great Stuff for rodents.

2. Just One Bite is the 'only' bait I have found to work. And yes many times you can't find it at the stores anymore. Just go to any farm/feed supply they always carry it.

3. And I bought a basement model Class C. THE best decision ever that I have made regarding an RV. The sewage controls are all inside a bay at a level you can reach. Beware some of these new C's and TT's you have to just about get on your hands and knees and crawl underneath to reach the sewer hookups.:R If you had a Class A before with a sewage bay you will want a basement model C!

And lastly I did all of the above and for 4 years never had a mouse in the RV. and I live in a rural area with farms/fields all around me......that is until the farmer switched from planting alfalfa to corn.

My first trip out in the spring my generator wouldn't stay running.
Mobile RV came out and I hear him asking me if I was expecting a long winter?

The mice had decided to store their stash of corn and packed it solidly inside every orifice inside my generator with corn!

The corn pictured on the ground was all from inside my gen in the filter, etc.
