city water overflow issue

This is my first post of an issue AFTER i scoured the interwebs for help.

2004 Fleetwood Bounder 35E.

Long story short, 1st time owni g an rv of our own. Grew up in them. On our 3rd night in the coach, we decided to camp at a location with hook-ups to test everything out and troubleshoot things if needed. Got it level, slides out, powered up, all is well so far. Decided to see if hooking up to "city water" increases pressure, boy does it! All is well until i hear water running outside (not raining lol). I look and see water free flowing out of the non-pressurized water port. Tank is now full, shut city water off. Read a bit, of minimal i formation found, about a by-pass valve located by sewage. Switch it to by-pass. All is well...for about 10 minutes, then I hear running water again but maybe half of the flow before i switched the valve. Am i missing something here, but isn't the by-pass supposed to by-pass the holding tank now? Out of the fresh tank are no valves other than a dump valve.

Thank you in advance!

I appreciate all of your suggestions! So this morning, i double and tripple checked that valves final position and it seems to be at it's destined position. So after checking that this morning, and orderind the pressure regulator last night, my normal thinking side kicked in. I decided to turn the city water valve on full, count the turns, back it off by half....problem solved, for the time being. Definitely pressure related

I have an '07 35E and as mentioned above you must close the selector valve to till it stops.....IGNORE THE DECAL POSITION. Once I figured that out my overflow problems went away.

Just grabbed a regulator on ebay. Will cross fingers!

Pressure regulators on Ebay are like 8 bucks. I think that is your problem. Some cities around the USA have upward of 100psi which is way too much for an RV to handle.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Water can get grit in it which will stick in the backflow/check valve of your waterpump. I suggest you disconnect from the city water and use your pump for a day or so to clean it out. Worked for me.

+1. The knob on our fill valve was loose. Also on ours I found that it turns much easier when I turn the city water off before switching it either way.

Another thought is that you did not say if you are using a water pressure regulator. If you are not you need to get one and use it when hooked to city water. Most city water pressures are too high for RV's. JMO

I do not have a valve between the two. I did read that there should be a valve between the two, but i have none. I wish i could post pics here. I will take pics, find a host, then link them here most likely tomorrow.

The check valve in my water pump was causing that problem for me. Do you have a shut off valve between the water pump and tank. If so shut it and see what happens. I replaced my water pump and solved the problem.
