Dirt ceiling

We just bought this rig and the ceiling has the carpet type covering...around the air vents it is discolored. You can tell they tried to clean it (there is some kind of power that falls out as you rub the ceiling). Is there a preferred way to clean these types of ceilings? Do you just hire a carpet cleaner to come in and steam clean it?

The carpet is likely Ozite: http://www.ozite.com/products/commercial/marine/

Best cleaner we have found is fantastik scrubbing bubbles oxy power.

If your handy, I think I would strip it off the hacker board. Which is probably 1/8 inch Luna, go buy some sheets of 1/8 inch refinished boards, cut and glue/screw it up. Finish with some quarter round on the edges.

I'm pretty handy...I usually buy a house, fix it up while living in it and sell it 3 or 4 years later (I'm in the military)...So although I wouldn't call myself an expert, I'm not scared to try...This might be a future project that will give it a really updated feel!

Power or powder? If when rubbing the ceiling material you see stuff coming out, I would guess the foam backing is failing. Meaning, you best choice is likely a complete tear off and replace.

Oops, sorry...yes, I meant "powder". But it doesn't really seem like the foam backing is failing as it's still very solid...it's more like they tried to sprinkle on some kind of agent to clean it with and then didn't vacuum it out or something.

Slightly different topic (since you mentioned it), the wife would like to take it off and do something different but that seems like a HUGE job...I have no idea what's under it or what I would replace it with...
