Driving a Class A Motorhome Gatlinburg to Cherokee

We are going to Gatlinburg for the 4th of July then headed to Cherokee for a few days in our 35' Class A MH. We are from Florida; therefore mountain driving is a new experience for us. Is it a death wish to attempt the drive through the Smoky mountain ntl park via 441???? Any advice ? Tips?

First...Welcome to the Forum.
I have driven 441 from G'burg to Cherokee several times. Traffic will be heavy over the 4th Holiday. Not many places to pull off the road going up for a 35 footer. Should be room at the top(Newfound Gap). More places to pull off going down to Cherokee. Be sure to stop by the new Visitors Center on the NC side.

I drove our church's 47 passenger MCI bus (think Greyhound) over 441 years ago from Gatlinburg to Ghost Town in the Sky. While the ride was "interesting", it was easy once I knew the road. I agree with the comment concerning some of the turnouts. Went around a couple and though my rear end was another vehicle tailgating me.

Traffic can be bumper to bumper at certain times during the Summer and Fall months. Other than that, the drive itself is not bad at all and certainly a beautiful drive. Some of the turnouts may be too full with other vehicles for your to pull into and enjoy the sights. We have made it many times with the coach with a car in tow. We try to do it early in the morning when traffic is not too bad. It is a single lane road for the entire distance so you may get a line of traffic behind you waiting to pass when they get a chance.

I have pulled several different size trailers over 441, up to 32 foot 5th. Have seen many large motor homes on the road too. Just remember to watch your speed on the down side, either by down shifting or engine brake if you have one. If speed builds up a bit use brakes to slow down, do not ride the brakes.
