Thanks also to Doug for explaining what the switches do and where they are located.

Thank you wilpower!!! There are 2 sw on the metal inside the freezer which you can only see when the freezer door is open. My wife knew where they were. When I pushed the one marked 'low ambient switch' the light in the fridge went out. Not sure what the sw does but the light works properly now.
Thanks again

Some fridges have a "humidity" setting and then the light stays on all the time. So yeah it could be normal for it to stay on, IF yours has that setting. If it does, try turning that switch off and see what happens.

Thanks to all who took the time to verify that their light went off when the door was closed or the switch was pushed

The odds are, your problem is 1 of the 2 switches above the freezer door. One switch turns on the frame 12 volt heater and the other switch turns the interior light ON and leaves it on. It does this to prevent freeze ups in the lower refer section when in cooler outside climates. Doug

If the light bulb stays on all the time, wouldn't that indicate that the bulb is good?

X-2, remove light bulb out of fridge until you get the switch replaced! Good Luck!

Thanks for the quick replys. Have you checked your fridge? Sw has 3 wires. SW controls wire back to circuit board but not light. Still searching for an answer

Normal? I don't think so.
It sounds like the switch is bad, and needs replaced.
