Looking for Michigan advice

I'm starting to plan a trip from New Jersey over to Cleveland, Ohio. After Cleveland I want to swing around and head up into Mackinac Island. After that I want to head west and drop back down through Michigan on the west side of Lake Superior. I would appreciate any suggestions on good campgrounds (with hookups) or advice on where to stay away from. Thanks in advance.

The Island is GREAT but remember you can't drive there you have to take a ferry.

Several years ago we camped at "Mackinaw Mill Creek CG" about 3 miles south east of Mackinaw City on US 23. Their facilities were very good and a current check of rates shows that they are still reasonable. Also I suggest that you visit "Old Mill Creek SP" just down the road. It has an operating water powered vertical saw mill, pit saw and a zip line.

I assume that you're going south in "Upper Michigan then through Wisconsin. If so stop for a "fish boil" in Wisconsin. It's real good eating with white fish and potatoes.

The only problem is The West side of Lake Michigan will take you through Wisconsin to Chicago. The East side of Lake Michigan is the West side of Michigan. The West coast of Michigan (the state) has great access to the lake and beautiful scenery. It is mostly sand dune all the length of the State.
Monroe State Park and Holland State Park also offer full hookups at some sites. If this trip is the week of May 8-15 you will be in time for Tulip Time in Holland with parades on Wed, Thur, & Sat. 6,000,000 tulips on 12 miles of tulip lane and the gardens. Check "Tuliptime.org" for all the entertainment and info that week. On Wed. Carsten, the town crier bends down with a white glove to check the streets. He then tells the mayor the streets need cleaning and many people with buckets of water and brooms sweep the streets. They have refills available every block and don't run out of water. Next 8th. street line for 6 blocks with the Klompen dancers who do their dancing and followed by a great parade of about 1.5-2 hr. It is fun time here and I go to the parade every year. I won't be here this year for the start but will get home for the parade +.
I haven't been to a State Park that doesn't have 50 amp also. There are also many private parks around also.

Any state park on west side are great. Pentwater is top 5 in MI. They fill very fast. You can only book 6 moths ahead in MI. Book soon.

Be aware that Michigan will charge us out of staters a fee for using their parks. Look into that before you book. That said, we have enjoyed many of Michigan State Parks. Most just have electric (30 amp). Also make sure you will fit in the spot.

First of all if your coming from Cleveland, avoid I75 through Detroit. go to exit 6 and go up US23 through Ann Arbor. your first stop for the night could be Hartwick Pines in Grayling Mi. It a state Park, one of the few in Michigan to have full hookups. You can make a reservation on the the web sir. Go to Michigan.gov. Mackinaw city has Mackinaw Mill campground, nice place. Petosky, or Traverse city on the west side are great places. Petosky has a great state park or 1st class KOA. Traverse city you can spend days looking at stuff
