Hello,

I am new to this amazingly exciting and nerve racking world of RV motorhome ownership. I’ll cut to the chase but must say any help would be so much appreciated!

I am the owner of a 1979 Chevy Rockwood motorhome. I’m trying to understand the grey and black water valves. I was told they are rusted and could benefit from being replaced. I’m having trouble understanding the basic info on what my valves may be and how to go about searching for replacements.
Thank you in advance!

I am supplying a link to old Dodge based Class C's. that would also include other makes. Most used similar equipment back then. Good luck with your search.

There is only one portion of valves that could rust. That is ones equipped with cable actuators.

Normal blade valves rods are stainless steel and should not rust.

Systems using blade pipe systems are easy to replace and not expensive. Could be messy, but s*** happens.

This example of 3-inch sewer valve normally used on black tank. 1.5 or 2- inch are used on grey tanks

I have had old boats and currently have a 12 year old RV. One thing I have learned especially my last boat which was a 1997 Silverton 372 basically a 40 foot boat with lots of stuff to keep running. Everything has a life span and has to be replaced at some point. If you don't know the history of it, then the only way you know how old it is, is to replace it. A 45-year old RV will need to have lots of work unless it was done already. If they are old and rusted, I would replace them when I know the tanks are empty, so I didn't have to deal with it when they have contents. That is not something I would sit on. Everything has a life span and most owners manuals will tell you, but I am sure you do not have one, so trust your gut. Otherwise, you may have fines if that happens at a RV Campground or going down the road. I would make sure all engine items have been serviced or replaced like belts and radiator hoses. Tires are only good for 6-years, so how old are your tires? Nothing like a front  tire giving out at 60 mph on the Interstate. Change oil and all fluids as they only last a year or two. Same with the generator. Ask yourself, do I want to enjoy the hot summer, or be working on the side of the road fixing my RV? The choice is yours. Hope to see you in the campground and not the side of the road. Oh, get a towing plan.

Oh, if you replace the valves, what about the hoses/pipes?

All the Best!

Welcome to the forum. Black and grey tank valves are usually blade type valves with a pull handle. Just google for the valves and I am certain you will find plenty of options. That said, your MH is pretty old so I am not certain a newer valve would be a plug and play. Plumbing is plumbing and I am sure there is a solution even if it means a little retrofitting.

If you have no experience with motorhomes, why are your dealing with a 45-year-old MH?

What currently works? There are much newer MH"s where parts are easier to find.

Meh, it’s just another 1 and done or spammer.
Hopefully not someone relegated to living in an old junk Moho (motorhomeless). If so, though I’d imagine that person would be more keen on fixing the issue rather than writing eloquently and suspiciously…hence why likely a spammer.
Seems this new forum is baffling some of the mods at seeing the spammers. Or maybe it’s now allowed?

It's quite possible we scared him off the forum. Or possibly he has not figured out to reply here yet.

🤔

If you click on his icon (or anyone's) icon, you can see how many posts and replies they have. In this case this was their very first post on this forum. The request would be legitimate in this case.

Hi,

I guess I'm too illiterate to make the click on icon work. It did work at RV net--but not in this new (not very good) formate.
