new to DP and question regarding charging batteries

Just moved from a gasser to a DP (2014 Sportscoach). To keep the batteries charged in my gasser I would hook up the 50 amp cable through an adapter to a 15 amp circuit at the house. When I went through the walk through I was told never to hook it up to less than a 50 amp plug. Doesn't make sense to me. Rallies always use 30 amp and I was told be some friends they hook up to a 15 amp outlet when parked in a driveway of a friend to keep the fridge going. I would appreciate your input.

My coach is 50 amp and I have it hooked up to a twenty amp plug all the time while on storage. Keeps the batteries charged all the time through the inverter/charger.

Now you can not run the air conditioners, but it will run other stuff that does not draw too many amps.

Congrats on the Sports Coach. Forest River makes a fine product.

Yes the posts above has given the correct advice. You have a power management system. It will determine what you can/cant use when plugged in to less than 50a

" When I went through the walk through I was told never to hook it up to less than a 50 amp plug "

That statement was based on wanting/needing full use of the coach. No problem hooking up to 30, 20, 15 amp supply as long as you're aware of the limitations. Some DP coaches power management sys actually auto sense when you're plugged into 30 amp and adj accordingly; some like mine have a manual button to press when hooked up to 20/15.
If your batts were really low, needing a full power charge its possible to trip a 15 amp breaker. just be aware of whats built into your power management sys and what you have to monitor manually.

I have lived w/30 amp for 2 months in the winter, I only run one a/c w/heat pump at a time. At home I use a 20 amp and can run one A/C only. My ac's take about 15 amps/ea for the compressor to kick in. So you can see why you need 50 amp for both to run at the same time.

With an outlet of less than 50 amps, you would not be able to run everything in the coach at one time. As long as this is not a problem, it's hard to imagine that it would hurt anything on the coach. If you try to pull more amps than the circuit for the outlet can provide, you will trip the breaker.

First of all, congrats on your new coach.....only safe and happy travels........

Most likely you have a power management system....yes, if you want to use everything like 2 ac's and electrical appliances..you should have a fifty amp hook up....but if hook to less than that say 30 amp, your EMS will cut out in order items to keep you from going over..such as one ac at a time etc..15 amps will keep your charger going and let you run the fridge on electric and use electrical appliances..probably won't run an AC but will keep you going..just make sure you hook up to a good electrical connection with no open ground or open neutral or miswired post...invest in a surge protector from progressive, the electrical system you save will be your coach..recently I had a bad post and had to live on 30 amps for two days..putting fridge on gas and water on gas...once charger charged the batteries...the EMS managed the AC's nicely and I was able to run the washer as well.
