OH******Check Engine Light

Was on the way to have the MH serviced today and about 3 miles from the shop I get a Check Engine Light :M. So I called this afternoon to see what's up, and they tell me they've cleared the code and it was for oil change past due time (as in # of days). See I only put about 3000 miles on the coach last year and it'd been a year since last change. So I guess the computer keeps track of not only miles since last change but # of days too. So no big repair costs! :B

My Kia Sedona's CEL came on recently, about 45 miles from home on I-5. I stopped off at my regular auto maintenance shop to have it checked and they said the code was for an "insecure gas cap".

Why it lit up two days and 120 miles after my last fill-up, who the heck knows! I was half-expecting a con-rod bearnbg to fail!

I did not know it could do this. Guess I stay on the maintenance schedule pretty closely though. I did learn that my Allison Transmission has a lot of "driver's seat" information just by pushing buttons on the transmission shifting control between the seat and the driver's side window. Very cool feature. I seem to always be learning and it is mostly a good experience and I am also guessing that it won't be ending anytime soon! Glad it worked out.

On a GM engine you turn the key to the ON position, but DON'T START IT, and press the gas pedal to the floor 3 times in quick succession and that clears the "Change Oil" message.

I'm not sure what engine the OP has.

More BS - Check engine light will NEVER come on for an overdue oil change.
I agree with I RV - it will be back!

That depends.. Some motor homes have one all purpose Motor needs attention light..Both for Oil And "Other" issues.

Some have two and some (of both)Have a 3rd light for the tranny.

I do not recall a separate "Check ENgine" light,,however Driver info display translates the trouble code so that does not matter. (Access to dash is a tad tough just now)

For ALL the nay sayers that said that my check engine light WIll come back on. Well I've driven the MH 3 times now for 5 hrs, and 225 miles and NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT! The code for MY check engine light was for "Service Over Due By Time" not mileage like most were referring to with their cars/trucks etc.

You know I just LOVE all these ARM CHAIR quarterbacks who don't even own a Motorhome, or a Cummins engine for that mater. The owner of the service center I used SHOWED ME THE READ OUT of what the code was and IT WAS FOR OVERDUE OIL SERVICE BY TIME, not mileage!
I have owned a motorhome with a Ford V10, have also owned a pickup with the GM 8.1.
Can't speak for Cummins or Dodge vehicles in general, but neither of my units would turn on CEL for an overdue oil-change.
The "change oil" message may come on after a certain period of time as well as mileage, but that's NOT the red light!

Jumbo-Jet, yes I can get my codes thru my info center but being as it was going in to the shop it was just as easy to have them pull the code. The shop I use is independently owned and not affiliated with any other company. I'm sure that they will never sluff off anything, I mean would a mechanic sluff off something that they could repair and make money on???

How to eliminate ARM CHAIR quarterbacks -

1. Buy a diagnostic code reader at your local auto parts store, Amazon, etc.

2. Download the codes from the Internet for your particular engine.

3. Travel to a diagnostic center and have them read and interpret the code.

I don't know if all engines give you the capability, but some vehicles have a key sequence that will allow you to see the code without an interpretation in the EVIC. My first Cummins equipped vehicle had that capability.

Maybe the OP was mistaken about it being the check engine light and it was the maintenance light instead. Easy mistake to make.

Person sold me my Class A said same thing about CEL - time for oil change. What did I know, I had never owned a Ford V-10. Engine ran like a Singer sewing machine! After buying a code reader I traced code down to a severed wire. Dang mouse! Easy fix once I found the wire end.
