On board propane tank

I have a 2000 Tiffin Zephyr. It has a 47.7 gallon (thats whats on the tank) propane tank. I had it filled yesterday but the technician at the Flying J said that because of its age that the tank needs to be recertified. They almost didn't fill the tank. They had to go to the manager to get permission. I've owned the rig going on 4 years now and have never had a problem with the tank or getting it filled. Does my tank need to be recertified and if so, where do I go to get this done? Any info and advice is greatly apprectiated. Phil

Well, that makes choosing where to get my tank filled a little easier. Scratch Flying J off the list.

Flying J must have some sort of thing going on here because this has been reported by others for the past couple of years. There's a good thread discussing this at:

Did he say inspected or re-certified? 2 different issues, although both are kind of bogus. The guy at Flying J that I dealt with asked when the last time I had it inspected. He claimed that this was a Flying J deal, not a DOT deal and that he was not talking about re-certification. He tried to tell me that it still had to be inspected. I have gone back and inquired with Flying J and they did not bother to respond back to me.

I've never had a problem with refilling mine and it's the same age.

Likewise. Although haven't filled at Flying J in a couple of years. Their propane tanks are almost always on the wrong side without going backwards thru the RV fuel lanes.

ASME? The Flying J is in Wichita Falls, TX Thanks, Phil
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers sets the standard for pressurized tanks. This Flying J needs some more information on lp distribution.

Many thanks. Yes it is frame mounted. It's not a portable tank. Phil

Report the LP station to the Texas Railroad Commission. They should NOT be certified to fill and service if they have ignorance on ASME tank issues and age requirements. Doug

I would go down to PattersonRV on Old Jacksboro Highway and see what they have to say about the built-in propane tanks. Good people there...

I was reading this post that might relate to your situation...

"Since the RV in question is a motorhome, not a trailer, I suspect the tank is a frame mounted ASME tank, which is not subject to the same rules as the DOT tanks used on trailer, gas grills, etc.
As stated, the best bet is to take it to a propane supplier, such as V-1 Propane, Ameri-gas, etc. and have them check it. Do NOT take it to Flying J, or U-Haul, or the neighborhood convenience store. Those people haven't a clue!"

Of course this will put you in the situation of where to fill the propane tank and keep from being told they can't fill it????

Needs more research...

ASME tanks do not get recertified. Propane "cylinders" do. Motorhomes have ASME tanks. Where was this Flying J?
