I'm going to keep the rv the way it came with 12v 8ds. I can get deep cycle 8ds cheaper than regular 12v. Soooo my question is...is it ok to use deep cycle for starting battery?

Yes that is the one I would choose. It is the middle of the three I linked above.

Answer depends on the size of the batteries.. Group 24,29,27 no, Group 31, perhaps, 8D by all means it is is OK,

The smaller starting batteries are designed to deliver a major hunk of their capacity (Well perhaps 10%) in just a few seconds (30 or less).

Well, considering the 8D is what, 260-300 amp hours.. that 100 give or take a bit the starter draws is a tiny fraction of the C/20 rate. (1/3) so there will be no problem.

IN FACT.. on my 8.1L vortec, when the chassis battery is dead due to some stupid trick like headlights on while at church... The pair of GC-2's (Equal to a 4D) start it with no problem. Your 8d is bigger.

Well get the specs such as CCA, RC and amp hours.
These are very common configured as a starting battery and the clerk just knows it is an 8D.

See these three. The heavier ones should serve you better.
Can't tell if the caps on that last one open to maintain the water level.

As long as the CCA meets the starting specification you are good to go.
Deep cycle will have lower CCA than starting battery.

What brand and model 8D are you getting?

No problem, Mike.

And, as an aside-- I always use the boost switch. It is hard to have too many amp-hrs of batteries on startup/hard to have too little voltage drop. In most cases you will more than double the size of the battery bank being used to pre-heat and run the starter.

SO, here is the order:

Turn on boost switch.
Turn key to first position to activate the intake manifold heater.
Start engine.
Release boost switch.

Obviously, if the house batteries are discharged (i.e. you have been dry camping) do not do this!

Hi,

I use a group 29 marine battery for the chassis. It works just fine. So will an 8D.

When the crunch comes for replacement I'll probably go to AGM chemistry.

That's what I used in my boat and I didn't have problems.
