Rear bedroom/closet slide out converted to bunk beds?

Has anyone done a mod like this? I would like a new Class A with bunks, but the $90k price is hard to swallow!

Looking at some older A`s for half the price, I`m looking at the ones with a rear bedroom slide on the pasenger side. I`m thinking the ones that have the full closet next to the bed could make a good spot for bunks like the newer ones have. I`m not worried about the work required to do it. looking for feedback on how it went and if anyone has any pics of before and after.

Thanks!

I was about to say the same thing about the windows, we have owned traditional bunk models (coachman 35DS and a Fleetwood Fiesta) before our current loft setup. In all 3, my kids have never opened/open the windows. There is plenty of air flow from the rest of the RV. If you look how they build tour buses none of the bunks have windows at all.

I just purchased a new coachman 385DS diesel with bunks. We wanted a triple bunk, but our only option was normal bunk. We removed the existing bunks and install 3 bunks. One of the bunks crosses one of the windows, it opens at the bottom bunk and extends air to both beds. However the kids never open the bunk windows anyway, there is plenty of ventilation at the other side of the bunk.

If it is for the kids only. It is pretty easy. Just 3/4 inch nice plywood, brackets at both sides and the back. Make sure the brackets fit into the frame. We found ours using a magnet. A nice strip of wood to frame off the front side of the plywood and stop the mattress sliding out.

If you need more weight, you should build a frame, and put 1/4 inch plywood on the top and the bottom. We used existing frame and built a new frame for the bottom bunk.

You can buy custom size mattresses from mattress insider.

If cutting windows in the slide you might want to consider the alteration of the structural aspects of it. It's one thing for a slide to be built with windows but another to make cut-outs after the fact.

Yes there are used ones available, but they are a premium. I can find an 04-06 with 3 slides for at least $10k less than a comparable model with bunks. And the used bunk models look a "bit" more used than the non bunk models.

Dodge Guy, while what you are talking about is doable, can you not find a used one with bunks? I see lots advertised. I have been looking at getting one with bunks and converting bunks to office/craft area, since there are actually very few MH's with separate office/desktop area.

Ooh. I like that a lot. The only thing is it would be in the living area. I like to stay up late sometimes and watch TV (laying on the couch). Thanks for the tip though.

But I could convert a full closet for around $500-1000k.

^ Wow! I could go for one of those, but not at $6,000. What a great idea.

that was my first impression when I envisioned a closet slide in the bedroom. but then remembered those floor plans where the closet/bunk slide was just ahead of the bedroom off the hall.

I'm talking full on conversion to bunks! Windows, curtains and a door to separate the bedroom. Just like you see in the new models with bunks.

RVs with bunks usually have windows for ventilation. It would be very hot sleeping in a closet. ๐Ÿ™‚

I assume you are talking about the floorplan where the bunk/closet slideout is immediately in front of the MBroom. since in some this was an option don't see where it would be a huge problem to convert. no plumbing etc. should be there?
