Route 66

Looking for suggestions of your favorite things to see along Route 66 (or side trips off Route 66). Taking it from Chicago to Needles, then hitting Zion, Arches on our way back home.

A must see in the Amarillo area is Palo Duro Canyon State Park. It's about 30 minutes from town. Cadillac Ranch is right on the I40 east service road. While you are there let the Big Texan Steak house pick you up at your site and deliver you back when you are finished with your meal. They have 14 limos and the rides are free unless you want to tip the drivers. I doubt that they will come to the park but there are several RV parks in Amarillo proper.
We were out there roaming around in May and wish we had spent more days in Albuquerque. It's just beautiful country.
We skipped Santa Fe and felt that Sedonna was little more than a tourist trap other than the natural beauty.
Homolovi State Park AZ is just a few miles from Winslow if you like standing on the corner. It's only 2 hours from the GC and has ruins from the 1200s believed to be the ancestors of the Hopi indian tribe.
Lake Havasu City is just across the river from CA south of I40 and is home to THE London Bridge and a fabulous lake of the Colorado River.
Don't try to do it all, just soak what you do in and enjoy the trip.
Most of old RT 66 is gone or in shambles, cool to see, but somewhat disappointing.

Stop at Clanton's in Vinita OK for a plate of calf fries. 🙂
Turn west at Foyil and go about 4-5 miles to see the big totems.
http://www.shepherdscross.com/ is just a couple miles off of 66 as you approach Claremore (turn west); our grandkids got to see a sheep being sheared.
Right in Claremore is the J.M. Davis Gun Museum, a massive collection of firearms.
As you approach Catoosa, on the right will be the Big Blue Whale.
In Tulsa, detour a mile south onto 21st Street (between Yale & Harvard) to see the Golden Driller.
Find a Braum's dairy store and have a chocolate malt, best in the country.
At Arcadia, stop at POPS to see a huge assortment of soda pop brands from all over the nation. And just down the road a bit there's a round barn.

We have only drive in New Mexico , Oklahomo and Arizona. New Mexico seems to have the lease amount of the real 66 road to get on of the three.

Well, depending on long you are and how much traffic, might want to skip the 66 route between Kingman and Oatman AZ. Lots of tight curves. You can get back to Oatman from Golden shores if you want to take in Oatman. Just East of Calif.

The big one of course the Grand Canyon, and i think the old wig wam village motel is still open, I want to go back and show the better half. I believe a lot of the original is now dirt road, might be a little iffy for a class A
