Look at my signature picture below. The third axle is the tag. You can increase/decrease the pressure in the axle which puts more/less weight on the drive axle and corresponding weights on the steering axle. Lifting it raises it off the ground to allow for a shorter turning radius in tight situations without dragging (scuffing) the tires. It provides more stability in windy situations and s smoother ride overall. Weight capacity on my tag is 10,000 lbs......Dennis

Increased gross weight capacity and better handling, but you lose some basement storage and have two more tires to worrry about.

The tag can be lift capable and/or stearing.

A tag axle is a third axle located behind the rear drive axle of a motor home. It is a non-drive axle with one or two tires on each side. The main purpose of a tag axle is to increase the support of the chassis at the rear of the vehicle, allowing for greater carrying capacity and shock resistance.
