Checking the ol moho over for a big spring trip and the tires just didn't look right. Made a trip down to my tire guy and he says these tires are 5 years old and they are real iffy for even a short trip. The tires are oem Michelins with 35k miles. They are cracked bad up next to the rim so I have 6 new ones on the way but not Michelins. Is this the norm for these tires? I have dealt with this father and son as my father for well over 50 years so don't go there. Just want to know is this what other people are experiencing.

Make sure you go to a Michelin dealer and get money for them from Michelin.
Then buy a good tire for a lot less.
They gave me half value toward any tire I wanted.
I bought Goodyear G661's and could not be happier.

Loyal Michelin buyer for 40 years until 15 years ago when the XRV's actually blew out sitting still...better than while moving BUT Michelin did nothing for those that bought their JUNK XRV tires. Unfortunately sidewall cracking is now common at 4 years and so bad by 6 that most have to replace. I have 7 year old Firestone FS400s on the front that do not have any cracks, wearing evenly, that I may go another year before replacing.

The 6 Hankooks on the rear are only 5 years old and if they still look perfect at 7 years will probably go 10 years on them BUT I've pull all the miles on them, aired properly and never even hit a curb.

I'm seriously thinking about Double Coin or Triangle tires next time.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Blknomad, ask yourself, have you ever had that happen with any other brand?

Lets just say I wouldn't have bought another set of Michelins either. :W
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

Decided a long time ago that Michelins are over priced for what you get. Michelin XLT M&S are the worst steering tires that I've owned in 50 years--they wander all over the road even though they have great traction in snow and a soft ride. I will not buy them again because of the unsafe steering. I have heard tire store employees commenting about dry rot in Michelins although I have not experienced it myself.

Many on the forum have drank the Kool Aid and are cheerleaders for them.
Personally think they are garbage. Sidewall cracks and zipper blow outs.

We also replaced our Michelins, less than 5 years old and very low mileage. Sun damage was the culprit.
