Anybody have suggestions on a campground within decent amount of driving to view White house state park would be our first choice, we would like to visit battlefields & monuments besides touring the white house-Thanks Rich
Cherry Hill seems to be best for touring within DC attractions.
A potential state park for battlefield visits is Lake Anna State Park south of Fredericksburg. The Fredericksburg area has 4 major civil war battlefields plus numerous civil war and colonial attractions. Most fought over area of the Civil War. There is also a KOA at this same area. You could spend part of the time at Lake Anna and then move to Cherry Hill for DC touring.
There are two regional parks - Pohick Bay at exit 163 on I95 and Bull Run near Manassas on I66. Bull Run has full hookups. Pohick Bay has electric and water at the least. Both are south of DC but closer to city than Lake Anna. I don't think there is any service that offers rides into city for touring. Never had any luck finding info on available spots in the Metro Parking lots on either I95 or I66.
I volunteer at Fredericksburg military park but I have tried to be unbiased about all this. Although we live in Arlington, we have tented and RVed for about 40 years at most of the campgrounds (except for Cherry Hill).
We've stayed at Prince William Forest, south of DC and most recently as last summer when we visited Mt Vernon, as well...http://www.nps.gov/prwi/planyourvisit/rvcampground.htm

Bus service from Cherry Hill to subway. Leave toad at campground. Don't even think about driving downtown. All those folks(congress, politicians, staff) are CRAZY! If you doubt that, just read the news. DC is a good place to visit when Congress is in recess.

Cherry Hill campground was the closest we could find. You still have to take the bus to the main train terminal and ride the subway into town. If you tow a car, this would be when I would use it. To drive to the nearest subway train station. It is literally less than 10 mins from the campground, but it could take you an hour if you ride the bus. Very nice resort campground. Would highly recommend. If you go to Mount Vernon, DRIVE YOUR CAR (they have plenty of parking) Do not take public transportation. You will waste 4 hours of your day doing this. Everything else is fine to take the subway. Cherry Hill has a website. http://www.cherryhillpark.com/index.cfm
