Looking in to maybe buying a new GPS. I like the Garmins but which one is best suited for the money, the RV 760LMT or one of the truckers 770 LMTHD or the 760 LMT?

I just ordered the Garmin Dezl 760 after much research. Yes it is billed as a trucker GPS but it has a RV setting and from what I understand the routing data is similar to the RV 760. Yet the Dezl was 100 dollars less. Good luck which ever way you go, I have had great luck with Garmin since I bought their very first commercial vehicle GPS in the late 90's.

..Here's one more vote for the Garmin RV 760 LMT. Thats what we have, and it works great both for the RV, as well as for everyday driving with any other vehicle.

I could not agree more, with the reasons already mentioned as to why a cell phone is just not a good choice for GPS when on the road. I never even considered using our phone that way when we were looking for a GPS, as I knew it just would not work well for that.

Smart phones these days can do a lot of really cool stuff and are very useful tools. However, GPS on the road is one thing better left for a unit built specificallly for that purpose.

I have had three Garmins and all failed within a short time. I will never buy another Garmin product. Same with a Rand McNally I had. I could never find anyone who could sell me updates or service. I would stay away from both those.

They may choose a GPS so they can actually see the screen vs. squinting at a smart phone.:)
.

The phone thing sucks when you start going over your data plan. We have 10 GB plan between four of us and we cut it close event month. Start using the phone for gps and forget it.

We have a 760 LMT with all the bells and whistles. However, Garmin has a new one with a 6 inch screen vs the 7 inch on the 760 that has a forward facing dash camera in it.

As you approach a turn it can be programed to allow you to use the dash cam to help find the turn. Also has forward collision warning and lane departure warning features. Not sure I would use such a feature but I have thought about having a dash camera to record all of those great drivers in front of me.

LOTS of reasons. First and foremost is size - IPhone is way too small to visually reference while driving the RV, the gps function on an IPhone kills the battery fast - it gets very hot and I can actually watch the battery drain using the gps function, I find the GPS on my iPhone not terribly accurate either especially trying to follow your heading, the functions on a standard gps are far more numerous let alone an RV specific gps and much easier to utilize, data and bandwidth usage is killer, especially if you pay for your data. There are lots more but those are the ones I came up with in about 30 seconds.

It's really hard to beat a large, easy to read and use device specifically suited for the purpose with all the helpful navigational tools and far more intuitive that's not only cheaper but requires no monthly service.

I'll use my iPhone in a pinch but it's very cumbersome at best even with a good signal. I'll stick to my Garmin DEZL.

Couple of reasons... first, if the phone rings while in a critical navigation point, you lose your navigation option until the conversation stops or the phone stops ringing. Secondly, and probably most importantly....if you aren't in a good cell coverage area, you may not have access to the base map for your location. The GPS part still works, but most of the phone mapping systems rely on the internet signal to send updated map sections while you are traveling. They don't actually have the maps loaded in the device because it would take up too much memory in such a small but complicated device.

To the OP...I'll add in my preference for the RV760LMT. It's got a big screen, a very-easy-to-hear speaker, and so far has been extremely accurate in my travels. And the LMT means Lifetime Map Updates so you won't have to pay for future map updates....you just hook it up to your computer and get the latest.
