Noting that many enjoy using Kingsford's brand charcoal.

I'm always open to re thinking my cooking tools so please say what type of Kingsford's (think they have about 4 different styles)you use and what you prefer about the one you prefer: availability, heat temperature(high or low),or some other reason.

TIA!

The extra ash you see is borax. Kingsford contains charcoal, starch, and borax.

Another thanks for the link. Been perusing it for several years and love the testing methods and the fact that it is done frequently:c.

I use the Kingsford original. It's an easy start, reliably holds the heat in a steady burn and lumps last a bit longer too without going out. A chimney starter is always a good investment for better starts as well.

That sums it up for using the original. Most important for using when cooking with Dutch Ovens as you want constant and consistent heat.

Original when I use charcoal. I add either hickory or mesquite for flavor with gas or charcoal.

Has anyone else ever noticed the fine gravel in the ash? I wonder where that comes from, if the charcoal is supposedly 100% hardwood? The hardwood trees around my area don't have any gravel in them.

KBB (Kingsford Blue Bag) user also!!! Temps are very consistent in my 18" WSM, with about 15hrs being the longest before adding more charcoal.

I use wood chunks for additional smoke flavor, usually apple and cherry.

X2 for a chimney starter!!! They are priceless.... No nasty starter fluid taste, and the charcoal starts very quickly. I use a couple pieces of paper towel with (saved) bacon grease to get coals going.

Plus if you stock up when it's 2-20lb bags for $9.99 it is very hard to beat!!!

Unfortunenatly it;s now two 18.5# bags for 9.88; Lowes, home depot, etc put it in sale for Memorial day, the 4th of July, and Labor day.

Not surprised! I saw the sale flyer for this past w/e, but I still have a fair amount of charcoal so didn't look that close.
