Thawing pad?

Saw a thread about a miracle grill mat but didn't want to hijack that thread.

We have a pad in our fiver that thaws meat incredibly fast. It seems like a coated aluminum mat, but I'm not sure. When any type of frozen food is placed on it, the food takes a little over half the time to thaw, than it would just leaving it out.

Has anyone seen one of these recently? Ours is so old I'm not sure if they are made any more. Any ideas where to find one? I think we got ours at a trade show. Never seen one in a store.

Would love to get one for home.

This thread reminds me of physics class. Specific heat coefficients of different materials and all. Materials with the low specific heat coefficients absorb the energy from the frozen food very easily. Some ice cream scoopers are made like this.

I've always used my aluminum cookie sheet.

I have a cast iron griddle. The frozen food starts to thaw when it sees that griddle. I would think a cast iron frying pan would do the same thing, even a new one. It doesn't have to be seasoned, but it will make some great fried chicken if it is.

ANY flat metal sheet with a relatively large surface area will work just fine.

Raising it an inch or so for air flow under the sheet works even better.

There is nothing special about things advertised for this purpose.

Yes, they are thick pieces of aluminum that help thaw things. A heavy aluminum skillet will work the same and hold the water. We've used one for years. Placing them in a place with more air flow helps. The bottom of the sink isn't a great spot.
