Dish Network and portable USB Drive usage

I searched and couldn't find where this was discussed before so if it has been please excuse me.

We're using Dish in the TT now and have Uverse at the house. We're thinking of using Dish at the house to save money. My question is, can a portable hard drive used in the house be also used to watch recorded shows from the house receiver or is each receiver stand alone in this regard?

Thanks,

Don't know if this is the same link to the thread, so here's another - portable hard drive for Dish

Thanks for the info. I think I found it. The VIP211Z receiver will use a portable hard drive but the ..Z receivers are not compatible with the other non "Z" receivers. Can't swap between the two.

Our portable hard drive(Seagate Backup Plus 2TB Desktop External Hard Drive) can be moved between our home Dish VIP211k receivers. Dish programs all your house receivers when you pay the one time $40 programming fee. I take one of the house receivers when going camping.

AFAIK, it's tied to the serial number and other identifiers of the specific receiver -- so "nice try, but no cigar"!
