Epson versus Canon, pigment based inkjet printers

A while back I posted asking for a recommendation to an upgrade from my Epson 2200 which has performed flawlessly for 11 years, but is now seeing the results of old age and much use! I the original post I wanted to stay with Epson. Based on my information for the upgrade, I am not sure I want to pay the price and am now looking at Canon. My new printer does not need to print any larger than 11X14. In fact 8 1/2X11 would probably suffice. I am most interested in my prints having longevity! I want the printer to be able to handle ink adjustments and printer profiles. If you have experience (good or bad) with a Canon printer let me know. I have used Canon digital cameras for 10 years. I bought an Epson Stylus N11 three years ago and have been well pleased with it. It's small so I can take it on the road with me. I chose Epson to two reasons 1) it was so cheap at Sam's. 2) I wanted the dye ink that will not wash out with water and I thought Epson was the only one that had dye ink. At home I generally use my non-color HP LaserJet 4,000 for most thing as it's toner is a lot cheaper than ink jet ink.

I've had both and have Canon now. The epsons seem to have a lot of problems with the heads drying out. Then again, my last Canon came up with a fault code that meant it was shot, period and not worth fixing. It's a******shoot, I now look for one that will take aftermarket cheaper cartridges. Pick a printer, then look at the cartridge websites to see if they have cheap ones to fit. If not, go to a different printer. They might as well give them away free considering the cost of their ink.

I have Epson, Canon and HP printers and all three make great printers and all three make not so good printers so look at the specs that you want. Epson makes Pro printers for up to 64" wide printing .

If you want good information on Epson vs Canon printers, I would go to www.dpreview.com and post in their printer forum. I've used both brands and they both have some excellent printers. The printing world has come a long way since your epson 2200. There will be a lot of hype over which brand is best. I would recommend ignoring most of it and find one that fits your budget and performance requirements. You won't go wrong either way. One thing you might want to consider is the size of the ink cartridges. Bigger cartridges usually give you more for your money.
