We still have DSL internet due to our location. On our modem today the DSL light is solid, the data light is blinking and the internet light is off and we cannot access internet. Weโ€™ve rebooted computer and unplugged modem from power and phone line. We do have dial tone on phone. Any suggestions? Modem dead?

Call Frontier...wait on phone for 1/2 hour...they have a service outage.

Just ended service with them (because we are on the move for the rest of the year). They were having an outage about once a week in Michigan. No they wouldn't give you any info on when to expect service to come back.

OP said in their original post that they do have dial tone, therefore they WILL have on hook of 48V or so..

The 48V can exist without the presence of the DSL carrier since the DSL carrier is a modulated frequency that is duplexed or superimposed on the 48V just like the analog voice modulates on top of the 48V..

It isn't up to the OP to troubleshoot the PhoCos line. But, the OP can try bypassing their homes wiring by using a extension wire from the PhoCos demarc box on the outside of their home and connect the modem directly to that box. If no DSL, then the home wiring is not the issue. But I suspect because they do have analog dial tone their homes wiring is in good working order.

One call to the PhoCos technical support should get them a new DSL modem if the modem is bad (a possible item) or the PhoCo will check their equipment and connections and fix the problem on their end if it is not the modem. The call is free although might get tired of the on hold music after a while.

Nope, not exactly true..

Your thinking of "bonded" DSL where there is a bonded pair.

Standard DSL however only requires TWO WIRES which is ONE PAIR and is much more common that bonded.

Don't know what OP has but if they are in the same situation I was with Century Link (who also owns Frontier) the OP like myself doesn't have bonded as an option.

DSL can be put on and coexist on the same copper wire as the analog phone via "duplexing", the voice portion of analog phone goes up to about 2-3khz, the DSL digital carrier starts above 2-3Khz. A special DSL filter is required at each analog phone. The DSL filter filters out all frequencies above the voice portion. Remove the filter and you will get an earful of digital buzz.

Bonding where available requires 4 wire (two pair) and a special modem that handles bonded DSL. The bonding allows for faster speeds than non bonded. But 4 wire (two pair) bonding is only available in limited areas and only if the PhoCo has enough DSLAM provisions available and operating.

The biggest problem with DSL now days is PhoCos have abandoned all copper systems and letting them rot on the vine. New equipment is no longer being manufactured and what PhoCos have left is used old junk waiting to finish withering and fall off the vine. They are not expanding copper, nor maintaining copper, when it quits, well you may be out of luck if they do not have any available working DSLAMs to switch you to..

DSL at this point in time is dead..

I moved on after dealing with extreme high latencies, lagging connections and no hopes of getting higher than 1.5 mbps connection even though only one property away could get 6 mbps..

We had to move to cableco Internet since DW had to work from home and DD had all of her classes move online and 1.5 mbps wasn't cutting it.

Umm.. Contact Frontier service?

Would seem to be a good place to start rather than throwing parts at something that just most likely is not on your end.

Assuming you have copper combo DSL/POTS line, it is possible to have a analog dial tone and your analog phone work but yet not have an Internet connection or the reverse (Have Internet but no analog dial tone).
