How to Reroute GPS

I know the route to send my sister. I am trying to set up my Rand McNally 7710 GPS for her to use. Michigan to Florida

I can't get my preferred route. I have spend hours on the GPS trying to get it set. At this point I am too frustrated.

I printed off a Google driving direction for her. She has marked major changes. But...

It sure would be nice to have the GPS help her out by giving exit announcements, correct lanes to be in, speed warnings, etc.

We have used our GPS quite a bit, but mainly took the routes the GPS suggested. It worked quite well.

I tried VIA and DETOURS. It takes a long time because it keeps going back to origin, I have to scroll through up to where I left off, there something happens and it changes the route! ACK!!

Any suggestions are welcome. I have worked on this all week, now I only have one more day before she leaves. ACK!

The GPS will route you what is considered the downtown area and not the intersection you might need for the highway change.

Actually it depends on the GPS. Some route you to town center and others route you to city limits when navigating between towns. That's one of the differences I found between Tom-Tom and Garmin. I don't know about Magellan.

Why is your route better than the GPS routing?

As mentioned above, input waypoints to force it to your preferred route?

Giving a GPS for some one to use without some pratice with the device can lead to problems.

Maps are best for her. Using the GPS just turned on to show where she is on a map and direction of travel could help.

Since you don 't really know where detours may be she needs to pay attention to road signs and doesn't need any added distractions.

Hopefully my next GPS will allow me to route where I want to.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I learned much. My two sisters made it to lower Florida tonight with the help of MapQuest highlighted paper directions, and my up-to-date FMCA map book.

GPS navigation device wants to work with the data it has and the algorithms and priorites programmed into it. While many have tools to help you force a route (I know Garmin, not RandMcN), once you break that route the device usually must recalculate using its own data and rules.

When I have my own route preference that conflicts with what the programmers of the GPS prefer, what works best for me are paper maps and an orange or pink HiLiter (yellow or green don't work so well for me).

My GPS navigation devices tell me where I am. I don't ask them to tell me where to go.

The trips goodsams club was cool.. Thanks for the suggestion! I programmed in the whole route, made a hard copy (not so good, not enough white space). Then went to add it to the RM 7710 thru the docking system on Rand Mc Nally.

Oh, wait, with the 7710 you have to pay $90 for the convenience. Oh, my. I think I'll wait and put $90 toward a new GPS down the road. It is too bad, because I really like this GPS in other situations. I'm just not willing to spend another $90 on an older unit (that may or may not continue to be supported).

Does anyone know a way around this self routing?
I could have her turn her phone GPS driving directions at the tricky areas around cities. Another idea?

Can you break the route into many pieces instead of doing the whole thing at once? I think that's much easier and allows you more control. I have never done the route myself and pushed it into the GPS. That's part of the GPS's job.

That would be a function of the specific GPS unit.

I always created routes on my computer and down loaded them into my GPS. much easier that way, can do minor tweaks easily. I wouldn't have a GPS without that option.

Have you tried creating your route with http://trips.goodsamclub.com/ and then exporting it to the Rand McNally dock and then transfer to your device. The dock software is available from the Rand McNally website (http://www.randmcnally.com/support/s/dock-software/rv-gps). I have an RVND 7735 and use this method all the time to create my own routes. I read on a forum (http://www.irv2.com/forums/f53/rand-mcnally-7710-using-good-sams-trip-down-load-230808.html) that someone did the same and exported to a 7710.

Are you using fastest or shortest routes?
