Modify netbook cooling vents ?

My little ACER netbook laptop always run real warm and the fan ran all the time so I bought a laptop cooler and it helped a lot.
I notice that the vent openings are so small and was wandering why they are that way? I think that a little larger openings would help in keeping the laptop cooler, has anyone made their openings bigger? or is this a bad idea!

OP here,
I have cleaned the ACER several times and it was not dirty and no change in the temperature, it's real easy to open it up, remove the battery and one screw.
My new cooler elevates the back of the computer and it does run quite a bit cooler so it probably OK I will keep an eye on it.

When was the list time you cleaned it? heat sinks/fans/etc often get clogged with dust/pet hair/etc.. The cooling system will only work if it's clean. I usually open up cases to do a proper cleaning.

Be careful of canned air as that can spin fans waay faster than they are designed to operate, and can cause damage..

thanks for all the come backs ! I think I will download Intel XTU and see if I can figure out how to use it ( not to tech y )
My HP laptop runs cooler and that what I was going by, the ACER is a lot smaller and has a lot of stuff in a small place and the fan is a small one. The ACER is used on trips and every so often to keep things up to date, the HP is used every day.

Had the same problem tired all of those gadgets with fans IMHO they do nothing but take up yet another one of your limited usb ports.

Interestingly I found at Walmart of all places, a REAL slick metal grated 2 piece on hinges,tray made for computers. The back has several positions to raise and lower the back end of the tray. Has a lip on the front to prevent it from slipping too.

"Cooled my laptop down immediately" without any fans. AND the elevation of the back also makes it much easier to view the screen and helps with not having to bend your neck down and brings it up to any eye level you need while computing! Light weight, folds flat so you can easily take it with you. Has like 20 different angle settings!

They have this great product hidden in the office supply section packaged in a box. Hard to find but I give it 10 thumbs up.

Before you cut up your computer, find out if it's running too warm. Google "Intel XTU" and download it. This app will show your chip's temp, as well as other diagnositics. If your cpu is running in the 80c range or lower, the heat isn't really a problem.

IMO, most important cooling technique is to elevate the back of the computer, so that air can flow freely into the intake vents (even if they're small) and out the back.

There are also cooling fans that mate to the back of the PC and draw air out like a vacuum. These are the siza and shape of a pack of cigarettes and about $20 each.

In my opinion, you should STOP there.

Actually "real warm" is not a problem and you really didn't need to do anything except be sure that the air inlet(s) are not blocked.

99.9 percent of the time, the people who design and build this stuff really do know what they are doing.

Probably OK, just be aware that there will be more dust getting inside.
