Old satellite antenna questions.

With a proper LNB installed, will one of the old 5 or 6 foot dishes receive usable signals from either Direct or Dish if properly aimed?? Not planning on trying, but just wondering. Anybody ever done it??

This is correct. And don't even think 2....even 3 LNBs won't work on a large round dish. 2 lnbs will even work on an 18" round dish,.....I have seen it done. There was less signal strength, but it works

FWIW- this is an "Alaskan" lnb mount- for larger dishes- around 5 foot (1.5m)

Id like to buy a ticket to watch someone not in the business point a 6' dish with an unfocused LNB. The first trick is aligning the horn dead center, then figuring out the focal length. IF you get that far, sweeping across the sky in any plane, you will probably have an X-Y tolerance of somewhere around 2". But it might be fun since you know it CAN work. You're not going to get multiple satellites out of it tho

Apparently I could make it work, but turned upside down, it would probably make a better gazebo. Then put the 18" oval with three LNBs on top for decoration. Leave cable connection in place for fast streaming internet. Of course, its gonna look silly towed behind the RV.

I do not believe an unmodified double or triple LNB would work, as the focal point of a 5 or 6 foot dish is much different than an 18" or oval- single LNB would work, or multiple LNBs on a widened mount.

The OP didn't specify whether he was thinking of a single, double, or triple LNB. An appropriate single LNB would work for a single satellite with either service, although it would be SD only on DTV in that case. It would also work with the mentioned 18" dish.

I will second that. The DISH antenna is somewhat better (since it is an oval) but even the round ones should have enough beam width to work. You do need a "Skew" or "Tilt" (Depending on who made the dish, they are the same thing) setting, but that can be done by other means on a fixed install.

I actually missed the "Dish" part. I am not sure you could get the signal from the 3 Dish satellites to focus properly but it would work with DirecTV.
