West coast to the East coast return, July 2017.

My wife and I are planning to leave Vancouver Island July 1 2017 and travel to PEI and then return around the end of August. Would appreciate any info on routes to take and travel costs in the US versus travel costs in Canada. Thanks.

You will be hard pressed to not find gas under $1.00 Can. a liter in Saskatchewan,especially at Costco,87.4 cents a liter this morning,just filled up.Check Gas Buddy for locations and price.

X2 on rt2 across the northern US. Nice road, little traffic most of the way, good scenery. Take you pick when you get to the Great Lakes. Go around the north shore of Superior & look at millions of trees or take a swoop down & cross into Canada again at the Soo. A good place to stop for a couple days anyway to watch the ships go by & through the locks plus do laundry & stock up on food before making that run through Toronto/Montreal. No fun at all in that stretch.

Couple of choices - for crossing the prairies I perfer the U.S. route #2 cheaper fuel then on the interstate
3 days of corn fields.
Canadian route - transcanada hwy 3 days of wheat fields ,rougher roads expensive fuel.
After that much more senic north shore of lake superior and the canadian shield.

Wife & I "DID THAT TRIP" 5 or so years ago. As stated (I use diesel) much less in USA even with the terrible Xchange rates now. We are also on Van Isle.

We went Canada, return USA. If this is "The TRIP of a LIFETIME" forget the cost. I probably wrote all mine down, but I can't find, nore remember one way or the other which was cheaper.
ONE major thing 2 months is not enough for any amount of sightseeing.

We went thru BC, Al. SK. lets just say ALL provence's incl. NB,NS, AND PEI - back we crossed out of Prescott ON. then about across I80 in USA.

We were away about 80 days - and it was NOT enough, mined you we spent some time with family in 3 or 4 areas.

If I went again I would take at a MIN at least 90 days, as I recall
I drove about 1/2 the days we were away.

Thanks for that. I'm thinking the lower price of gas in the US will probably offset the higher cost of everything else once you factor in the exchange rate.

Even with the exchange rate gas will still be cheaper via US routes.
For example today in Montana regular gas is US $2.20 per USG which is about the same as CDN $1.00 per Liter. You will not get a liter at CDN $1 any where in Canada during the driving season.
