BIKE TRAIL GULF STATE PARK, AL

Good morning, hope I pose this question in the right forum. I have made reservations for winter 2015/16 at Gulf State Park, Gulf Shores, AL. I was wondering if anyonne knows if there is a bike trail that runs from the state park campground over to the local Wal Mart. I have vision issue, so I don't drive anymore, but still can ride the bicycle. I will need to get to Wal Mart to get groceries. I remember seeing a bike trail in the park heading that way, but can't remember if it goes to another city trail that passes in front of Wal Mart. Does anyone have this info to share. Possible a site that I could go to and see a map of the trail. I have looked at Google Earth and can not see a trail going that way but I may be missing it. Thanks for you help.
This will be my first time to be a snowbird.

Hi Bamaman1, I know it gets cold down there butI think that for the most part its going to be warmer than up here in the med west. I picked Gulf Shores because I have vision issuses and don't drive anymore. My kids have said that they will make sure I get ther and back.So I thought closer the better this year. The next winter my sister who usually drives the MH will be retired and we will be heading deep into FL. I am tracking the temp in Gulf Shores and comparing it to my home temp. I think

The panhandle of Florida and the Alabama and Mississippi Gulf Coast is cold most Winter days.

Florida south of Orlando is best for January to March if you want to be warm.

It was in the 40's two weeks ago when we got off a cruise in Port Canaveral. And I've seen snow in St. Augustine.

Thanks Lou/Pat for the info. The info is very informative. The more I learn the better I feel about being there. I spent 11 days in the area in April and really enjoyed it there. I like the idea that the beach is close and that the big Pavilion is there also.
I assue that there is a bike trail over to the pavilion area. I sure hope so.

Camped there in October - yes to both of your questions. The bike trail runs from the campground, past the entrance to parking for more bike trails, past the golf course and onward to the traffic light at WalMart's entrance. Not good at route numbers but you will have to cross 1 road in addition to the entrance. Just to repeat the trail is asphalt, is separate from roads and is safe. Drivers in that area seem to be very courteous to cyclists. Plus there are a total of 14 miles of paved trails within the park. Call the park, people there are very nice. Have fun.

It looks like if you ride eastward out of the park, there are more bike trails that will take you all the way up to Orange Beach? Definitely a bike-friendly area!!

Thanks Deb and Ed for the satalite view. Heck .3 mile on the wide shoulder is not an issue. Its great to know that I can ride over to the Wal Mart. I try to do as much as I can on my on. I have to ask emough times for a ride when I have to go longer distances. So this will be a piece of cake. I have the saddle bags, panniers, on the back of my bike, so it will be easy to bring groceries home. Tnanks again.

Using Google Earth, I can see a series of trails that lead to the Walmart entrance on Ft Morgan Rd. Part of the trail appears to be a wide lane along the road for .3 mi, but other parts are separate from the car traffic. There are stoplights at the entrance for you to cross the road safely.

I've "clicked it off" (the red line is the bike path) and it's 2.83 miles - probably 3 miles by the time you get to the front door. Walmart on the left; State Park on the right

The bike trail does not go to Walmart, but you can ride on the edge of the road. The speed limit is 35 mph.

We've camped there a lot and there is access to a great bike trail by biking about 1/2 mile from the back of the campground to the trail. I don't think the trail actually gets you quite to Walmart but it's close. So I think you would have to ride or walk a little ways on the street and not sure how that would work out for you.
