I really like the Ready Brute Elite tow bar with a built in surge brake. It operates your car's brakes.

If you have, or want, a different tow bar, they also have the Ready Brake that can be used with any tow bar.

With either of them, you need the Ready Stop emergency breakaway kit.

Both of the above braking systems come with the In Dash Light Monitor. It is designed to tell you when the Ready Brake activates. Personally, I prefer to know when the CAR'S brakes are actually applied. I recommend that you install a 12v relay on the car's brake light wiring, and hook the dash light to that. That way, if something snags the car's brakes and keeps them activated, you will know it.

It's optional. In our case with a 31 ft MH and a car that weighs 2700 lbs. we have opted not to add brakes to the car and it's legal I believe up to 3000 lbs. But you can add a device to the towed vehicle that will apply brakes.

You need some type of mechanism to activate the brakes on the towed car.
