Homeless Cat -- Now Spotacus' Legacy

On 18 Dec, a very large cat showed up at our house. It was late and cold, and he looked in the door and made it clear he wanted inside. Well, since we have two cats already and he was a stranger, we could not let him in the house. WLToo walked out and the cat ran to him, so he walked the cat into the garage and into the climate controlled room out there.

He was extremely hungry and thirsty, but in otherwise good condition and very clean. We fixed up a bed for him, set up the feeding and elimination stations, and went to bed.

Next day, we worked in the garage all day, while the big guy slept or supervised. We found him to be an intact male, no sign he's ever worn a collar, and he has a strong need to be in the general vicinity of humans. For an intact male, he's remarkably mellow - I don't think he was the alpha cat in his previous home.

Have had zero responses to the "found cat" notices around the area and online, so we'll be working with the local rescues to get him neutered and all his shots, then find him a home. We can't keep him because he's just too big for our two cats to share our small house. Alex would have another emotional meltdown, and I don't want to go through that mess again (long, ugly story).

For now, we're calling him Spot, not that he answers to it (does answer to "Kitty, Kitty"). No idea how he travels; we'll find out when we take him to the vet on Tuesday.

If anyone knows of someone who would like a large (about 15-18 pounds) cat who needs to be with people, please let me know. No cat novices, please; this cat needs someone who knows exactly how to handle an adult cat of this size, especially when he's feeling frisky.

We're at Canyon Lake, TX, so if there are any Winter Texans nearby who would like to meet him and maybe give him a home, that would be great.

:S The haggis!!! I forgot the haggis!!! Drat. Oh, well, next year, now that I have the web page bookmarked.

The weather turned a mite chilly for New Year's Eve, so the fireplace was a nice touch, once WLToo got the wood to finally burn. Took him three tries before it finally caught, which has happened to him exactly never before. We didn't burn anything today, even though it was chilly and raining, because we want it all for tomorrow, when it's going to be flat out cold.

Tall and Short Friends had a terrible start to 2019. First, his truck decided to short out, so it's in for repairs. Then on the way home from our New Year's Eve gathering, her SUV's rear window exploded inward as they passed a fireworks stand. Despite a thorough search for any projectiles, they found nothing to explain why the window went all splody. No indication that anything untoward had occurred at the fireworks stand, either. Just another of life's little mysteries, I reckon.

So tomorrow, we'll pick them up at the glass replacement place just down the road from our house, and they'll feed us brunch at the breakfast/lunch place that opened up last summer.

Meanwhile, WLToo and I are getting used to those FitBits. Amazing how far one walks just on an ordinary day. Looks like we'll ramp up to the recommended 10k daily steps (five miles) fairly quickly, and then I expect we'll lose a few pounds of ugly fat.

The cats have established an evening schedule that they do not want to change, even when the house is full of people. About 2000 (8:00 pm), they zoom. At 2100 (9:00 pm), I get double barreled kittens in my chair with me. It's always Czarny on the left and Rudy on the right. Then about 2300 (11:00 pm), they want to play.

Speaking of which..... Later, y'all.

It was absolutely lovely today, in the upper 50s and sunny. Didn't need a coat when I went over to help at the library. Shelving books will sure add up the steps...

Now it's cooling down fast, with a breeze moving the wind chimes on the north porch. WLToo turned the heater on, not that I need it, with double barreled kittens on either side of me...

The doe herd was outside our fence this afternoon, but I couldn't see all of them, so we still don't know if Leoghaire is still around.

College roommate and spouse are joining us, Short and Tall Friend, and S&TF's recently widowed neighbor for New Year's. We'll serve munchies and beverages. I may make some Glรผhwein, if it's cold outside.

The boys are upset that I'm typing, so I'll stop and let them pet themselves. Later, y'all.

Time to get one of those baby slings for Rudy eh? Hoping Leoghaire turns up.

Christmas was fun, and we didn't have to do much of the work. We gave each other FitBits, and we are becoming used to having something around a wrist again. Still learning what all the apps in it do, but its already being a nag.

Rudy has thoroughly planted himself at my side, except when he parks on top of the glider loveseat. Getting in all my steps for the FitBit is fun, trying not to trip over my faithful companion. Luckily, Czarny is not quite so determined to trip me up, or I'd not be walking anywhere.

Nice bit of rain last night, so we didn't have to add water to the pool. Otherwise, it's been dry, sunny and in the 60s/70s. Cooling off tomorrow, though, so we might have to turn on the heater.

We've not seen Leoghaire for over a week now, and there's one fawn that resembles hers going it alone, who doesn't seem too afraid of us. I do hope Leoghaire didn't run afoul of a vehicle or poacher.

Czarny wants to play. Later, y'all.

Sounds like the kittens have discovered belly bucking.

I'll have to keep an eye out for some Amish furniture places. I like that style.

Thanks, Mitch. It's shaping up from a "unique fixer-upper."

Magnus, the glider is from Amish Oak of Texas. Had a matching gliding ottoman, too. The dining table and chairs are also AOT.

WLToo told me that when I'm gone, the boys hide until I come home. Well, as of yesterday, that stopped. I was out and about yesterday and today, and the boys stayed in the great room with WLToo. He watched the boys come charging at each other, leap in to the air, and bang their chests together, fall away, then shake their heads and stroll away, only to do it again later. Kittens...

Just put the Advantage Multi on Czarny, which is not too difficult. Now I have a towel draped over me, waiting for Rudy to climb back up here, then we'll wrap him tightly before doping him. He's just too skittish for WLToo to get near him with any medications yet.

Baked the jam tarts for Christmas day dinner at Short and Tall Friends' place. So strange to not be hosting Christmas dinner after so many years. Kinda like it...

Sister was out of time and ideas for a funny gift for Short and Tall Friends. I went over to the hardware store, looking for some tacky lawn ornament. Instead, I found buck head string lights, with full antlers on each light. Funny and appropriate, considering the huge deer herd that sleeps in their backyard each night, then grazes all day on the adjoining golf course. It was perfect.

Well, Rudy's not cooperating. Time to track him down. Later, y'all.

I can just picture that, Doug. Luckily, we have no stairs...

So our writers' group potluck went off without a hitch. Even Rudy came out for the party. He decided the mere presence of more humans would not stop him from his early evening zoom through the house. Czarny was very sociable, as always, but Rudy really surprised us by not hiding under the bed.

It's very strange, being escorted everywhere I go. I haven't had to watch every step for years. After the third time Rudy nearly tripped me yesterday, I told WLToo we are too old to have kittens anymore. It's too dangerous for us old geezers. Next adoption will be elderly cats...hopefully, that's way in the future.

Rudy has started bumping up against WLToo's legs, although he still won't allow any petting. He's less and less afraid of WLToo, so with patience......

They both have a new favorite toy. I finally got batteries for the red dot (laser toy). Now they pretty much won't play with me using any other toy. They hear the click and are instantly ready to chase the dreaded red dot; they'll even come to me, demanding the red dot -- it's a different meow from their normal "play with me" meow. They've already figured out where it comes from, but unlike Spotacus, they don't care. They simply have to chase it. They will even play with WLToo when he wields the red dot. So much energy requires killing the red dot multiple times a day.

When they finally wind down, here's the new napping configuration:

Normally, that afghan is thrown over the back of the loveseat. But whichever kitten gets there first pulls it down and makes a nest. Guess I'll just put it back whenever we have company.

Short and Tall Friends are coming over this evening, so she can meet the kittens. Guess I'd best get their presents from Mom wrapped. Later, y'all.

Cats and Christmas trees make for interesting stories. The best I heard was from one of our receptionists. They had a split level house and their tree was in a corner next to the stairs. Their cat got up about 10 steps then jumped to the top of the tree and took the whole thing down. In the future they anchored it to the stair railing AND tried to do some kitty training.

You're fortunate they aren't interested in climbing the tree. Some of our past feline explorers thought it was a gas to race to the top of any Christmsd tree we had whether it was fake or real. I guess they liked the view up there.

The tree is decorated, and the cats think the two blankets underneath are very nice. The tree itself is of only mild interest (thankfully). Still, the only breakable thing we put on it was the Nรผrnberg angel on top. With the shot bags weighing down the bottom, I doubt that tree will fall over, so she's safe.

Just a few more things to pick up and we're ready for tomorrow's potluck. At least we don't have to host anything at Christmas itself, for a change.

Czarny is trying to hog my lap, so I'll close and get back to work. He can have the chair.

Later, y'all.
