"Show me" (funny)

OK - yes I am biased towards the working/herding breeds because they're so darn smart...... but I have always taught my dogs to "show me" what they want. Each has had their own way of getting my attention - but they dutifully take me to the "problem", whether it's an empty food dish, a ball out of reach, a boat floating away, etc.

We were at our condo in Florida, and since I had just put new tile/grout down in the sunroom, the dogs hadn't been able to use their "normal" door to ask to go outside to potty. Ben was clearly conflicted when he meowed at me (yeah - my dog says "meow").... I looked at him and said "What do you want? Show me"

You could see his little brain-gears grinding, then he ran over to Jimmy and stuck his nose right up under Jimmy's tail! Yep - message received; we went out the other door, and Ben went poo.... ROFL!!

I couldn't tell you where that little bone-brain is at this moment. When he wants something, he will stand directly between me and the couch. Just stand there...won't move, except for maybe a little tilt of the head. Hears the word outside, he does a 360 right where he stands, then goes and stands at the top of the steps. Gives me that "you said outside---get up, lets go" look.

If it was just cause the water or food bowl was empty, when we get down stairs he goes and stands in front of them, instead of the door. Knuckle-head has figured out that if he can get me to let him out, he can show me the bowl is empty.

Comes and gets me at bed time too. Lays at me feet by the couch...only time he does it. He knows I have to get into bed first, but then we can snuggle.

Anyone who thinks dogs are just "non-thinking animals" - hasn't owned a smart dog. My late Aussie Ike was a freaking EINSTEIN. We live on a lake; and our family gathers on the 4th of July to go out on our pontoon boat that night, to watch fireworks. Normally, you can't take the boat out without the dogs coming along. As everyone was getting on the boat, there was only our oldest son and myself, and Ike, still in the house. I turned to Ike and said "We're going on the boat to see fireworks. Noisy booms. Do you want to go, or stay home??" He looked at me, paused, then went and laid down in the kitchen. He didn't like fireworks - wasn't scared of them, but certainly didn't enjoy them.

My son was standing there, with his mouth hanging open, then finally said "I don't know what stuns me more - that you just said that to your dog; or the fact that he answered you?!

When I ask my dog is she wants to go outside, or wants dinner, etc, her "yes" answer is to bump my hand with her nose. Her "no" answer is to ignore me.

Both funny stories! I prefer the herding and working groups too, for just that reason---they are so darn smart!

Funny....

One of my dogs would "show me". One night as I slept Duchess hit my hand with her nose, I asked what she wanted. She went to the door to be let out. She went out and did her business. I let her back in and went to sleep.

Some time later she tapped my hand again. She went to water bowl it was empty. I got up, filled it, set it down and then went back to bed.

Just as I was dropping off to sleep she nudged my hand again, I looked at her and said now what do you want ? She stared at me and then took a step closer and burped right in my face. I guess that was her way of thanking me for the water.
