Taking the dogs with

We are packing up and going on the road. Just trying to figure out the beat way for the dogs to travel with us.
Any advice would be great.
We have two dogs 50 lbs and 75 lbs. we are debating on kennels in the bed of the truck with or without a soft top. Or harnessed in the bed with cushions and a soft top.
We have two kids in the cab already.
Thanks for any recommendations

Go review his post.

FYI......you know by using a thermometer. Ideas like thermometers (remote temperature sensors) come about by thinking how can it be done safely as opposed to automatically saying it canโ€™t be done safely.

OK, I went and reviewed his post, and you're right, word for word, he did say "any advice would be great" ..... so I stand corrected.

Yup, I know what a thermometer is. We even have them here in Alabama! But thanks for your description anyway.

Now, that all being said, dogs still have no place in a pickup bed. In case of an accident, all the insulation, fans, and thermometers you might have won't do much good. If the dogs can't fit in the cab with the family, please board them.

No, I'm not a member of PETA, but I have been blessed with an extraordinary amount of common sense.

Happy travels!

Just to keep the dialog friendly in here.
I did ask for all advice because we would like to make a very informative decision.
Thanks for ALL ideas and experiences

Just b/c there isn't a law prohibiting it doesn't mean it's a good idea. A professionally build, steel carrier with proper ventilation and frequent water stops to check their ok or in the cab or leave at home. And, IMO, the proper steel box would only be for short trips in any case. Dogs in a truck bed just on a rope or in a regular kennel is lazy and irresponsible, bed cover or not, when driving any distance on the road.

OP said nothing about insulated kennels or power ventilation. He just said kennels. So, I agree with the previous two posters. Dogs belong inside the truck, with family, in better conditions. If the AC in the truck fails, you know it immediately. If 'power ventilation' failed on one of those fancy kennels, when do you realize it....a few hours down the road? Might be too late then. Sorry, dogs shouldn't travel in pickup beds.

Inside the vehicle or board them. Or, rent a motorhome and everyone is inside.

Kids and dogs in back seat will sort it out themselves. Please, NOT in bed of truck, even under camper shell.

Heat would be a major concern under a topper. To hot out especially without air movement. I carry my two Collies in the A/C crew cab. I about lost a Collie carrying them in a topper to heat stroke. First and last time I did that.

Sliding rear windows fixes this. I have one 60lbs dog that rides in the cab between the wife & I.

We travel with 3 dogs. They ride in the cab of the pickup. It is okay to bring a crate or two if they are crate trained. Not good in hot weather.

The best thing is to blend them in with the rest of the family.

In the cab with the rest of the family. You can make it work.
