Landing Gear not working with switch/motor

Can't get the landing gear to move up or down using the motor. I installed a new motor and gear box. The motor works when not connected to gear box. Gear box moves fine. Landing gear work if I manually lower or extend them. I guess its the screw or gears in the landing gear? Any advice on how to fix this?

Depends. Usually the jacks and slide are wired directly to the battery and are not disconnected by the trailer's "battery disconnect switch"

That switch will isolate the battery from the converter though, so on shore power the converter can't do one of its jobs-- maintaining the battery. Scenarios vary, but it is often better to leave the battery on the converter.

YES. Normal.

Motor might run off your 120 VAC ==> 12 VDC converter, but won't carry a load without the battery.

Glad you got it working. Hope you didn't change parts you didn't need.

Many with Landing Gear or Tongue Jack, have the Trailer Connector plugged in and the truck running. But in ANY event, you need the Trailer Battery charged up and connected.

OP says motor runs!
Yes, in many situation an auto-resetting circuit breaker is beneficial.

Most landing gear systems have an inline fuse that gets popped when the landing gear is "over run" at the fully up position. Start following the wiring from the switch to the batteries looking for a fuse holder. If that is the situation, I would buy a "auto re-settable" fuse and put it in place of the standard auto type fuse.

If you can manually crank them up and down it is not the gears or screw in the legs. The manual crank uses all the same parts in the legs.

Welcome Aboard!

As asked above, please post Make/Model of the Landing Gear. Sure sounds like there's a shear pin/key of some kind in there.

I looked at repair parts for Lippert and Bulldog, both had Roll Pins in the kits. If it only needs a pin or key, hardware stores and big boxes have that stuff. I helped a camper repair his HappiJack truck camper jacks, and the parts he got at the hardware store seemed better than the ones that arrived from HappiJack a couple days later. My part was to cut the hardware store roll pins to the right length. A "bi-metal" hacksaw blade will cut those split roll pins, and it sure helps to have a vise.

Please clarify how the motor was electrically connected, when it ran without being connected to the gear box. All same as when installed in the trailer? If not same, then with it installed and not running, check its 30 amp (usual size) fuse.

Might help to say which landing gear you have, as there are "exploded" diagrams on line to show how the motor goes onto the gear box etc

Many have a key between the motor and the gear assembly.
