Need help replacing spring on Carefree of Colorado topper

A neighbor had the spring break on his topper and we are having difficulty removing the nylon end cap to get to the old spring. We drilled out the two pop rivets but the thing doesn't want to come out. Any one with experience on repairing one of these or maybe pointing us to a video is welcomed.

DH did the main awning, but not a topper. Should work the same though.

Yes, that is what we thought also, but it just doesn't want to come out. The end cap in question is either nylon or plastic so we didn't want to get carried away. Thanks for the suggestion though.
