Onan output wiring

I have a 6500 w Onan with 2 - 120 v 30 amp breakers. Is it possible to run the two legs to an electrical panel, then to a 240v to 120v step down transformer? My question is for two reasons. With only one leg being loaded, it seems to me that it's putting uneven pressure on the generator, and also the one breaker being used sometimes trips if the inverter is doing a bulk charge on the battery bank AND another heavy load kicks in.

Without knowing the actual model number of the generator, we can not answer you. It is possible that it is two 30 amp line in phase and as such you don't have a 240 output, you have two 120V lines at 30 amps each. Onan has built all manner of machines.

The unit is new, model HGJAB-904

i have never seen a 6500 with only one winding
all i have seen are (2) winding's wired in parallel
some times tied together before the breakers sometimes not
but always (2) winding's

of course i haven't seen everything, ever done with Onans and RVs
I can explain it to you.
But I Can Not understand it for you !

Unless it is an old unit, or a commercial unit, your Onan is a 120 volt genset, both breakers come off of one single winding. Is your rig a 50 amp or 30 amp rig?

Somebody wired your breaker box wrong? What is the main in your breaker box?
Too much load on one side
It is most likey wired with all your loads on one side including one air
And the other side is only carrying the other air

Yes it could be reconnected for 230v but you don't need too do that
Just need to have a two line input breaker box, using both generator output lines
And balance the load distribution

The other question is the water heater on LP? What about the fridge?
When In hot weather using the genset and air, making sure those stay on LP manually is a good idea, so they don't switch over and use the Onan power

That Onan is big enough provided the loads are balanced
I can explain it to you.

Many older 6.5 NH Onans (1,800 RPM) have a terminal block inside the box with the breakers. If you know the wire numbers to reconnect the unit will deliver fifty amperes at 120 volts.

I would LOVE to get my greasy hands on one of these units.
With a WOOODWARD electronic governor to hold speed at precisely 1,800 RPM, these saturated field (self regulating) generators are near bulletproof.
