This guy cut the shroud on his A/C---Good idea?

Its a 15 minute video of him cutting the shroud and installing metal lath. Idea being there is better airflow and therefor better cooling. Feel free to fast forward you wont miss any special tips.

I read some of the comments. Few people disagree and which way the air flows. Several said older units used to be open like this mod. Negative was damage during hail.

I wonder if smoothing out the backside depressions on the shroud might increase the airflow significantly? It would be less work to simply caulk those depressions, thereby reducing air turbulence while maintaining hail protection.

Sorry to be clear about the hail it was the older units with no protection to the fins. They had more airflow but could be damaged.

Looks like a solid idea to me.

Same here seems like a good plan. I don't get the hail comment tho. If anything the shroud looked to be stronger than the original.

I saw this and agreed with how he went about it. Did you see the part where he measures the improved air flow? I would do this with both of mine but I have no issues to date...also I think my shrouds are designed differently.
