When we had a Roadtrip (we have since installed a Trav'ler), once I had a good signal on the TV, I turned the Roadtrip off so it wouldn't start searching again.

How long are you allowing the antenna to finish it's reception fine tuning? It is not unusual for a Winegard Roadtrip to take 5 to 10 minutes to fine tune its positioning and stop searching after acquiring and locking on a sat signal.
