A "how to" for installing a brake control on Tesla Model Y

Hi folks. I cross posted this to the other forum.

I have been meaning to put this up for a bit. This is a "how to" on installing a brake controller in a Tesla model Y although I think itโ€™s the same for a model X. The whole thing takes less than 30 minutes but I did it over two days as I needed a couple of black screws. Recommended if you have a black dash.

We are used to a Tekonsha so We went with the P3 this time.

You will need the pigtail from Tesla. 5 bucks. Mating it up to the Tekonsha wiring harness is not straight forward as the colours donโ€™t match. Just use my pic and match from there. The only wires that match are blue to blue. In the picture the Tekonsha is on the left, the pigtail is on the right.

The connector is behind the carpeted kick panel on the left. Use a plastic tool and pull back the panel. Youโ€™ll see the little white connector tied off way down on the bottom. Connect the harness and coil up the excess behind the panel.

Mount the P3 with the wide provided bracket. You can see where we put ours. Two small screws.

Connect the controller harness to the back of the controller and you are good to go. You can connect it earlier as well as itโ€™s kind of hard to see.

Here are some pics. You might have to orient them a bit. I suck at that. Hope this is useful for somebody in the future.

Cheers.

You can see the controller thru the left side of the steering wheel. There is a plate further down you can mount to but honestly I am used to being able to reach the lever for emergency sway control etc.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Cheers and stay safe on the road all.

Sorry. haven't been on for awhile so missed your question.

We tow a small T@B trailer. Not sure how far we could tow but I'll hazard a reasonably accurate guess of 240 kilometres. The farthest we have towed in one shot is 203 kilometres ish. Nice combo., Works well for us.

Cheers

I bought my Model Y with the trailer tow hitch but my wife has forbidden me from using it so far. I will try to save this information in case she ever eases up on me.

My son's Model 3 pulls remarkably well. He has a utility trailer that runs in the slip stream of the car and I know that he has pulled over 3,000lbs with no issues and minimal effect on range. I love the way the Tesla all wheel drive works when pulling. Much smoother than the 4A setting on my F150.

Does the brake controller come on when using regen or does it wake for you to actually touch the brake pedal?

Near as I can tell not with regen, although I think that may be how I have it set. We have a little trip coming up in about 3 weeks and Iโ€™ll try and pay attention to that. Good question.

Cheers.
