AC maintenance

My question got lost in the Dog/AC posts. I simply would like to know what you do from year to year for AC maintenance. Does the freon have to be refilled every year, if you can? Thanks

And I will just add if you are looking to buy a used RV.....open the ac and make sure the previous owner did NOT drill and add an adapter to add freon......because in some states no licensed ac repair company will work on your AC.

If I'm not mistaken, these are sealed units and you couldn't add Freon if you wanted to.

I clean mine on a regular basis but my wife is ill and she can tell if it is dirty. Get up and pull the cover, sometimes they aren't dirty anyway. One year mine had a hornets nest in it so I put the cover back and waited for frost. That's the most excitement here in years.

The typical RV A/C unit is sealed and you cannot add refrigerant without adding a port to the system. Normally refrigerant is never added.

Clean the fins, filter, and drain holes. I clean the filter once or twice a year and the rest whenever I think of it. Probably two to three years.

Just did it yesterday! Bought some coil cleaner and cleaned the external coils with a toothbrush, cleaned the fan motor shat and lubricated it, inspected the drain holes, and cleaned out leaves and old wasp nests. I think freon is only added when needed. You also should keep the inside filter clean. The hardest (and most time consuming) was unscrewing and reattaching the housing.
