Any Predator Generator reviews?

Now when my build-in Generac died and even new $350 board is not fixing it, I am researching more reasonable option.
$500 inverter generator have excelent reviews and some say it runs smaller AC just fine, but forum search shows 0 topicks.
Hard to believe nobody from the forum tried it?

Actually, the hot setup on a roof ac unit would be a free start (no load) compressor motor with an electromagnetic clutch that you could engage either manually or electrically, when the motor reached rated RPM. That would really drop the start amps.

Pie in the sky though. Too costly for a production ac unit.

I actually succeed building something like that for my scuba compressor.
Used 2HP industrial motor and those really suck on start up.
So having 3000W Honda, I could start the motor alone, but not with the compressor inertia (no pressure) attached to it.
I made a clutch from V-belt where a lever would take the slag on or off. So after starting motor alone, I pull the lever and the compressor start pumping.
Goes to 3000 psi with no problem on the generator.
But this is not idiot-proof design you need for camper.

It is state of California-approved. Shall I say more?

Nope. Kalifornia approved means it's no good for anyone else.....:p

Or make a motor that doesn't require so much starup current.

It's the load on the motor that sucks the amps. Electric motors pull maximum amperage at start, especially under parasitic load. The way around that is of course an easy start which is just a set of capacitors that jump start the motor, much like a single phase to 3 phase static converter. The converter does nothing but excite the T3 leg to get the motor spinning. T1 and T2 are already 220/1, it's the T3 leg that single phase won't excite.

While camping in Sierra- we did not need AC so battery charging and occasional microwave oven use was all I worry about.
It did all I needed, including running coffee maker and on this one, the HF coupon work, so I paid $80. Even I did not really needed it, could not refuse the price. Not that easy to start, but I've been dealing with small engines since I was 14 and even without advanced mufflers, small engine was hard to hear inside the camper.

Wow, that is amazing. And it's all you need if you don't have A/C.

Thanks for the update.

My AC draws 7 amp, so the only problem is starting it.
Few years ago Yamaha was making small generator with electric starter and inverter boost from the battery.
Don't see those anymore, so I assume they did not work.
My new truck come with 400W inverter and to my surprise it will run small 120V compressor I have. Same issue with starting, yet it does work.

Ok, found the Predator. It sounded real nice, much better than yesterday when he said he was burning up some bad gas. With fresh gas, it's fine. (I have no idea why anyone would do that, but that's what he said.)

It was running a small load of an outdoor Karaoke system. Could barely hear it. When asked if it would run his air, answer "no, you'd need two for that." They can be paralleled.

So yeah, it's a pretty sweet deal, and that's saying a lot coming from this die-hard old Honda guy. He's only owned it a year and hasn't worked it very much and doesn't plan to. I think, for its price, one would assume the longevity and service may not be the best, but, if it fits your needs, I'd say it's a nice buy.

On a personal note, this camper and I are the only ones with inverter gens. Everyone else, and that means about 8, have extra-loud open frame ones. A guy and his buddy are running, side by side, a Briggs and Stratton, and a big Champion. It sounds like they're doing a tree-trimming operation...it's loud. But it's hot, and everyone needs air, so as long as it's quiet by 10pm I'll survive. I'm just lucky I'm not parked near that din.

Before "man on the mission" will accuse me of hijacking my own thread, you Flip paint bad picture.
Moving around the World I changed friends several times. Have no problem to make new ones.
Than my father's friend took his 3rd wife to be 34 years younger. She eventually took care of him and he rest peacefully.
Health is what really counts. My father is 93 and in good health beside being 70% blind.
Still that doesn't stop him from gardening and reading computers, while his younger wife takes care about the rest.

I bought a new genny this spring for our 9' camper. We don't have A/C so didn't need a 2000+ watt machine. I looked at Honda and Yamaha, and balked at the price. Finally bought a 1500 watt Firman from Home Depot...

... on sale for $249 (Can) which included delivery to the front door. It has a 3 year Home Depot warranty. I could by four of these for what one equivalent wattage Honda or Yamaha would cost in Canada. Out of the box, and some fuel added, it started on the 3rd pull. I've used it a number of times now, and it'll run the microwave, coffee pot, and toaster (only one at a time, of course...) just fine. And a half hour a day seems to keep the camper battery charged right up. It's fairly quiet -- 63 decibels -- fifty feet away from the camper, we hardly notice it. We tend to use it boondocking (hunting & fishing), with no other rigs around. It's not too heavy -- approx 50 lbs. I'm late 60's and pack it around without difficulty.

Good luck with your decision and purchase.

Lots of different brands out there. I see RV Country sells Lifan's (which is what a Predator uses for an engine, or so I'm told), pretty inexpensive too. Lifan is a good motor for a Chinese motor.
