Auxiliary Tank Question

My former F450 (2011 long bed), I had a 90 gallon auxiliary tank installed by my dealer. It was a rectangular shape with a small tool area going across the top. So it was flat across the top and a little over 19" tall so it was just about flush with the top of the bed.

I have a new F350 (long bed) and plan to do the same within the next two weeks. But I noticed the 90 gallon tanks now come in two dimensions: 19.5" tall or 22.25" tall. The 19.5" tall model is 57" long and 31" wide. The 22.5" model is 57" long but only 25" wide.

So basically I can stay with a flush top to the bed of the truck or extend about 3"-4" above the top of the bed and save 6" of room in the bed.

I prefer to save the room in the truck bed by going with the 25" width model but clearance for a fifth wheel concerns me. We don't have a 5er right now so its no big deal. But one of the reasons I bought this particular truck was it had the fifth wheel prep package. That's how sure I am we'll get a 5er once I decide to act my age and stop racing ATVs.

Its a long bed so that helps. But how big of a concern will it be to have that 3"-4" sticking above the bed? Will that height come into play when making tight turns? I say I'll always be careful but it only takes one mistake to totally screw up the front nose of a camper if I make a mistake.

No. I'm having my Ford dealer do it. They've done one before for me, did a good job, and its reasonably priced. Not to mention it helps if any warranty issues were to arise.

Good point. I hadn't thought about that. Thinking back to our 5er days, I think you are correct. It will most likely block my view. Dang. 🙂

Thanks Biscuit. The 6" clearance is what I need opinions on. Having more room in the bed is worth it but again, poking a whole in the nose of a fifth wheel would ruin a trip.

Minimum bed rail clearances is typically 6" and even with 6 " some contact can happen when making off level turns.

Tight maneuvers forward/reverse 5vr overhang can swing across forward area of truck bed.
