Battery Theft...

I went to hitch up my trailer the other day, and discovered that someone had stolen my battery right out of the box. Fortunately, I had it disconnected, so they didn't do a slashing grab. $128 later I was on my way.

I'm interested in knowing how the rest of y'all secure your batteries. I did a search, but didn't come up with anything. Amazon only has one thing available. It seems to me there should be some options.

The OP never said where his trailer was when his battery disappeared but if parked at home I'd be looking for somewhere else to live. :W During the season I keep our own trailer parked on our driveway, with the tongue enclosed with a fabric BBQ cover, primarily to protect the black plastic parts from fading, but I suppose it keeps the tongue components "out of sight, out of mind" - regardless, I've never had any issues in our neighbourhood with "sticky fingers". :B

While camping I've also never had any issues with anything disappearing, don't take any special precautions other than storing my Weber Q out of sight when not in use, and frankly wouldn't ever give this any thought.

For winter storage I do strip the tongue of everything, mostly for cleaning up and preparing for the next season.

I guess that leaves parking the trailer in a remote storage lot between camping trips. Years ago when I did store in a remote lot during the season I never took any special precautions and also never had anything "disappear" but had I given it more thought I'd probably have secured the battery with the type of battery box lock linked to earlier and the propane tanks with a cable lock run through the tank collars and around the tongue.

We enjoy living in a place where that stuff doesn't happen yet.

When I had my trailers I always removed the battery and took it home. Hooked it up to a trickle charger to keep it charged. Don't trust the kids in SA.

I have 4-6V Golf Cart batteries and they are housed in a truck tool box on the front of my camper between the camper itself and the propane tanks. It has 2 automotive style locks rather than the paddle style lock. Not cheap and not theft proof but better than a plastic box.

I asked him to do one thing and he didn't do any of them.

A piece of transport chain and a lock around the box, tight, so it's a ***** to get off for water check.

For propane tanks I drilled a hole in the wing nut and pad lock it to the tank hold down bar. Vice grips could still back off the threaded rod maybe? Someday when the tanks are off I could spot weld the rod to the base.

with the device shown and the type of padlock I use, yale with a slot on the side leaving little room or access to lock/hasp I think they will pass on mine and go over a slot and steal yours.

Got to park the trailer in the back somewhere and not out on the sidewalk so to speak...

I have been real lucky here at my house/neighborhood... Folks around here don't even lock their doors haha... I know we are doomed sooner or later...

My outside lights come on at night with motion sensors and we don't have dog's here - Just cats...

PROPANE TANKS and BATTERIES all go with Drug Factories etc... Sometimes you hear of the thieves taking the whole trailer to house their drug factories operations...

It just keeps getting worse and worse I guess with no end in sight... Doesn't matter where you live... Hate breeds more hate...

Having good Insurance is the best suggestion I reckon...

Where was the TT when the battery got stolen? Best bet is to set it on a bench in your garage hooked to a smart charger.

Mine sits just as it came from the dealer, in the box and cover. I have never had anything stolen We have three dogs that let us know what is happening, and since we live in a rural setting everyone looks out fr one another and we are all armed
so we have practically no crime.

But, what if the OP doesn't want to move to Florida and get three dogs? :B

Just leave them in the box - no issues and our street is the busiest in the neighbor hood and lots of foot traffic.

A lock box or locking tie down strap as suggested are all that come to mind to deter theft. They would appear to be the most simple and straight forward solution.
