Buying a TT in the US and exporting to Canada

I searched but did not find a thread for this.

I am looking to buy a new 2013 or 2014 Jayco Flight 22FB TT and there are some good prices in Michigan - reasonable driving distance for me - savings of $3000 over price here in Canada.

I have exported a car before, so familiar with the process.

Looking to hear of anyone's experience in exporting a new TT to Canada.

For a fee of $195 CAD, the gas to drive down and back and the paperwork required I can save over $3000 - not chump change.

Well - here is what my local dealer said - no big surprise:

Who will service it and make sure that ESA is compatible with are standards. We run into problems with US units. ESA and propane. We can not service them in our shop for insurance reasons.

So typical. A dealer in bc tried that on us. They get their rigs out of the US so what they are saying is BS. We bought out of the US. the US dealer has been very good, Pete's RV and helped us when we needed it. Only minor issues. Otherwise our rig has been great.

Wow, what total baloney. I would never deal with anybody who tried to blackmail me that way.

I know - bottom line - If it really needs any major warranty work, I can easily take it back to the Dealer in Michigan if need be. I had a new Terry trailer for over 10 years and never had it in the shop for anything. To be honest - minor stuff I fix myself.

WHAT?????

Tell him to go pound sand. There is no such thing as a "US unit".

I would cross him off any list of mine just because he is a big fat liar.

Great responses - thanks!

I did contact the dealer in Michigan and they are happy to facilitate the paperwork and deal with Canadians all the time.

I will give my Canadian Dealer a chance to be competitive. If they come within about $1000 then I'd rather buy local, but for $3000 less I won't 🙂

It's been done lots of time, by many I am sure. My in-laws did last year, bought a new 5vr in Florida. They had a problem at the border, and had to drop the trailer there and leave it while they fixed the problem. They didn't have the original plate document or something from the dealer? it was a photocopy and Customs wouldn't except it. It was likley a problem with the dealer not understanding the process since they were in Florida, I sure Michigan dealers are more familiar with this.

But why not first take the print off price from the US dealer to your Canadian dealer and show them the 3K saving, tell them come down or you'll buy there...at least you gave them the chance and save yourself the whole hassle. That's how I got my dealer to lower the price, I told them, the US border isn't far and lots of selection there :W

Might not get $3000.00 off but with your method they should be able to reduce enough to make the local sale worth it.

they won't here in NB. I gave them all the quotes from Wana Rv center and they just said "go buy it". I was willing to spend 2200 over Wana's pricing (allowing plenty for the extra shipping costs) but the closest they could come to was 6000. It is of course different in Ontario. I found quite a few dealers that would come within a 1000 of the Ohio wholesalers in Ontario.

You may want to look at warranty as we were informed while buying our Zinger that it may not be covered as if bought in USA not all dealers will cover this. They make their money on the sale and following warranty issues but are reluctant to work on your unit if not bought here in Canada. Some say warranty has to be covered anyway but I would check this out. We could have saved 4-5K on our unit but bought it here for this reason.

so you paid 4-5K for a warranty?

you realize most of the components of a trailer are covered by their own warranty and not the manufacture (appliances, electrical, frames etc.)

there is actually very little that the manufacture would be responsible for. Maybe a leak if caught early enough or a window issue.

were you informed of this "may not be covered" by a Canadian rv dealer?

If you go to the CBSA webstie(formerly Customs)cbsa-asfc.gc.ca you can learn all you need to know about importing a vehicle into Canada. Long and short of it, contact RIV with the make and model of the trailer to ensure admissibilty(should not be an issue), ensure there aren't any active recalls, sometimes you can get a letter from the manufacturer. Delcare your exportation with title to US Customs 72 hrs in advance(most dealers do this, for more details contact US CBP). Upon arrival in Canada declare your trailer, present bill of sale with all documentation. Pay your RIV fee, 195 + GST. You will have to pay the PST to the province upon registration. Make sure you bring your CBSA receipt to the Motor Vehicle branch (form B15). Bring your Form 1(RIV form) with you to the MV branch. Importing any vehicle is simple. If you have any questions you can call CBSA border information services and they can help you here is their number 1-800-461-9999. Hope this helps some.

Call Tradwinds RV in Clio Michigan, they do a lot of this type of sale. They are about an hour and fifteen minutes from Port Huron. I bought my unit from them in June and had a great experience. They are owned by Terry town RV in Grand Rapids, the own 4 or 5 Jayco dealerships in Michigan. When we bought ours they has units that were made for Canada with the Canadian flag on the side.

Cdn Tire do not charge ANYTHING for the inspection. It is included with the RIV import fee. CSA only applies to a Canadian dealer selling RV's not an individual purchasing from the states. The process is virtually pain free and warranty is not an issue either. There are no hidden fees or pitfalls you need to worry about...I've imported our last 3 units at an average savings of 30% over any SK/AB dealer offer.
